This is a best buy IMO. I had one but the body waist was a bit too wide for me. The good stuff:

*One of the better rudimentary filter-based EQ's. You can actually get the stereotypical "waa-waa" as you sweep the knob.

*Graphite laminate between the fingerboard and neck.

*The DR5 has an inherent low-mid "growl" that I've never encountered in other basses irrespective of price.

I agree. I love this bass. And honestly am only selling because I am a 4 string player and want a Jazz bass.

The pickups in this bass are Passive and the preamp is a filter based system. So with the mini toggle in one position the preamp rolls off treble and boost low mid and bass. Similar to a passive tone but not exactly. In the second position it acts as a mid scoop. Treble is enhanced and mids are cut. I know there are many contradicting post about these pickups being active but they 100% are passive.

I had a DR5 as my main bass for about 4 years and loved the neck profile. It was a fun bass to play. I later added a bone nut and upgraded the preamp with a Bartolini and “Boom”! This is a really good bass at a really good price. GLWTS.

Are the pickups single coil or split? The reference DR web page lists both, not clear.

Do you know of any direct replacements for the pickups?

Can you please post a pic of the control cavity?

They are split, side by side. I have 3 of these pickups in a project I built and that is what I found.
They are fantastic pickups and really contribute to the unique and wonderful sound of these basses. I've seen a number of these over the years where someone swapped them out and routed a bigger cavity and it almost brings me to tears every time.

Thank you. That is correct. They are passive humcancelling pickups. Very open tone for great range. Some people put bartolini's in. I am guessing X5's.

Zero interest= I am going to keep this beast. I prefer 4 string basses but this is a way better bass than many twice the price. Getting custom pickups ordered and maybe some hipshot hardware. :-)
