Hello!
I am selling my fully carved Shen Gemunder 7/8 Roundback with a C-Extension and solo extension fingerboard. The bass is an unmarked prototype of their Gemunder model with a spruce top and maple back and sides. This bass is a round back as opposed to the current Willow models which are flat back. Mike Shank estimated this bass was made circa 2000.
Mike Shank installed a new fingerboard, bridge, sound post, and C-extension on this bass in 2020. It comes with early Irving Sloane tuners -- not what currently come on newer Shen basses. The bass has a 42 1/8" string length.
The bass is drilled for a Laborie style endpin at a fairly common angle of 45 degrees and slightly angled toward the G string side of the bass. I find this "productive lean" toward the G string really helps the bass feel light and balanced while sitting and standing. The bass comes with two wooden endpins, one for standing, one for sitting, as well as an adjustable angled pin if you are not the same height as me
The bass is currently strung with Spricore mittel strings and comes with a Full Circle pickup installed. [see updated photos 2/20/25]
I have used this bass for orchestral as well as chamber concerts and jazz concerts/recordings. While I play mostly jazz and improvised music, the previous owners of this bass were all classical bassists that primarily used it for orchestral work. It is a versatile instrument with a powerful sound. For example, I met a guest at a outdoor wedding cocktail hour that couldn't believe the bass wasn't amplified. He was a bassist himself and could hear every note clearly on the opposite side of the courtyard with around 80 guest chatting loudly. It's a great professional freelancing workhorse bass!
