Fretless
  1. Y
Custom built by Karl Hoyt, who apparently is not building any more 5 string basses in order to concentrate on acoustic instruments. I have a fretted Hoyt that I’m keeping but fretless is just not for me.

The body is a gorgeous slab fashioned by Karl, who found it in a northeatsern mill; it had probably been there since before the Civil War. Neck has great figuring. The board has a tiny bit of wear which I assume came from roundwound strings - you know who you are - that I immediately tossed in the trash. Where they belonged. Anyway, the board has a lot of life left. Gotoh tuners, very lightweight. Passive electronics, all working as it should.

Shipping prices have ballooned with all the services, so figure $150.

I have no desire to re-string it but will, kicking and screaming, for an additional $75. I have new Cobalt flats and MAYBE some EB Slinkys. You probably have your own strings. I know I prefer my own.

Again, KH ain’t making no more and the ones already out there don’t often come up for sale - because they’re really great instruments.

I’m getting ready for a fire sale on a few basses, going cheap. Watch this space.IMG_6910.jpeg IMG_6908.jpeg IMG_6907.jpeg IMG_6913.jpeg IMG_6906.jpeg

Hi. Whereabouts are you located? I'm interested in the Hoyt, but I would like to see if i could check it out in person if you happen to be somewhere in New England/NYS.

I build stringed instruments.......
Howdy folks. Mr. Bovinehost ( sounds like some sort of witness protection alias) is a friend . Somebody asked me to fill in some of the details that Mr. BH may not know about. So here goes
  • 34 scale
  • 22 fret lines
  • probably 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 at nut
  • Front to back thickness at nut: 22 mm tapering to around 25mm at heel
  • 16” radius fingerboard
  • Carbon reinforcements in the neck
  • My usual asymmetrical c shape neck profile
  • Light ash body, satin lacquer amber sunburst.
  • Nordstrand P/J’s
  • Hipshot hardware ( maybe gotoh tuners)
  • Either v/v/t or v/blend/tone, which is an .047 cap, probably orange drop for the real nerds’ edification.
  • Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin the scene with a gangster lean.
That should adequately describe it. But remember, you’re asking an old man to remember details from about 10 years ago!
