Details

I bought these here recently and they didn't fit my bass. These came off 2000s Classic '60s series Jazz. Which would have been obvious if I'd just taken a good look at the photos. (My neck doesn't have the indents). Oh well. Includes ferrules. $75 shipped CONUS.

Here's the original TB thread where I got these

Yeah, I have an ‘89 or ‘90 Fender Japan JB62 that has reverse wind tuners, those also are installed with no indentions so they are raised up a bit in spots.

@Robert Gross FYI, the real pre-CBS Fender necks did not have any indent relief holes for these tuners either (they didn’t sit flush on the old ones either). They started making indents for them around 1964.

It never occurred to me to install them without the indents, so that they raised up a little bit. I suppose I could certainly do that?? I guess I just thought that was “wrong”. Hmmm… Maybe I’ll keep them after all.

A little off topic but just because subsequent reissues didn’t have the indentations doesn’t mean originals didn’t. Reissues also added a strap button to the headstock that doesn’t appear on early original models.

The indentations were made at the factory with tools on original precision basses until the went to the different shaped flush mount tuners.

These tuners should not be installed without indents or relief routs.

What brand of tuners are those?

They aren't current Fender tuners as Fenders are now made by Hanchang in South Korea as evidenced by the "HC" logo on the back of these two different model Fender tuners:

Do you remember where you got them or what brand?

Thanks!

I don't know the brand. I bought them here on TB recently. I'll try to find the original thread...but I don't think the original thread had any additional info.

just make the indents. I've done it many times. Takes about 5 minutes per tuner. You can use a chisel, a dremel, even a drill. Just have to mark the locations carefully, and work slow.
