I bought this from Andrew Drake last year. He was sent the body and some wood and was asked to make it a medium-scale 5-string bass. When I got it from Andrew, he took it in as a trade toward a new custom build from someone on this site. He was cleaning it all up and thinking of keeping it, but when I inquired about it he told me he'd sell it to me.
I used this bass subbing on the Broadway show Wicked for a while, as well as a bunch of songwriter gigs here in the City. I always got compliments on how big and how great the bass sounded.
This bass came to me as a PJ bass, but the J didn't balance with the P pickup because it's so close to the bridge. I decided to use this bass as an experiment to try this pickup combo that it has now, and it was a total success. The new pickup is a very custom Nordstrand BigRig with a narrow aperture. They don't offer this outside of their Artists because it's a difficult pickup to make.
The bass came to me with a couple of issues, so when I had the new pickup routed and installed I had the other issues addressed as well. The bass needed a string tree for four of the strings (it came to me with a string tree for three strings). The G string was too close to the edge of the fingerboard, so the nut was very slightly widened for that string. The bass didn't balance well, so the strap pin was moved, with a second strap pin added so you can place it on the floor without the bottom of the bass touching the floor. The bass balances perfectly now. It also got a full setup while in the shop.
So, here are the details of the bass:
-5 string bass
-32" scale length (can be strung through the body to use regular length strings)
-Custom Drake neck (maple with a bubinga fretboard) on an Ibanez basswood body
-Nordstrand pickups: a P and a custom narrow aperture BigRig
-passive volume/blend/tone wiring harness from fatbasstone.com
-16.5mm string spacing at the bridge
-small Schaller tuners
-Schaller bridge
-1.5" nut
-I don't know the weight but will update when I have it....it's not a heavy bass...a previous owner listed it as 8.4lbs...so more than likely still under 9lbs with the new pickup
GREAT B string on this little bass.
The bass will come with a set of LaBella low tension flats, and I'll include an extra medium scale set of Ken Smith Steel rounds....just add a B string (I used a D'Addario Prosteel and it was a perfect match!)
No case is included, but the bass will be packed extremely well.
$1600 shipped in ConUS only, please. With all of the upgrades to get the bass playing professionally, it took some extra money. It's set for life now for the next person! Will give you a better deal if you're local!
Thanks so much for having a look!
Best, Andy
