This build is a Skjold Designs Drakkar Catacomb. “Drakkar” refers to the body shape. “Catacomb” refers to a proprietary semi-hollowbody chambering method Pete Skjold uses to create a deep, resonant tone within a comfortably slim body depth. This bass has a deep, warm and woody yet articulate and clear tone. It was built for me in 2019. I have been the sole owner.
I have owned a number of high-end, boutique basses (some of which came at substantially higher costs). This is the finest tone, playability and overall vibe bass I have ever played. Pete is a superlative luthier as well as being an all around cool guy.

The above sound links are highly representative of the tone of this bass. This bass is was modeled after Damian Erskine’s and is nearly identical aside from these key distinctions:
- This bass is five-string, rather than Damian’s six.
- Damian’s bass is passive, whereas this bass has the full bells-and-whistles Skjold Tone Deluxe Preamp (which includes an active/passive push-pull pot --- see the preamp diagram below).
- The woods on this bass are slightly different than Damian’s. This was mainly about my personal aesthetic preferences. Again, the tone of these two basses is very close. If anything, the tone of this bass (due to the walnut top and back and the lightweight Spanish Cedar body) might be heard to sound a touch less “electric” and a touch “woodier”.
