The time has come to part with another old friend. I picked this bass up 20+ years ago and it has served me very well. When I got it the strings were so corroded that I couldn’t even tell if they were nickel or stainless. And yet it still sounded pretty good so I knew that I had a good one. The frets were in pretty rough shape so I had my luthier re-fret it with period correct fret wire. I believe I also had him make a new nut at that time. The pickguard was broken at the jack, which is pretty common with these, and he repaired that as well. I had some nickel rounds on it for a short while which sounded great, but then switched to flats which is what I’ve used on it for most of the time I’ve owned it. Bass currently has a set of Labella LTFs which are still breaking in.
The bass was sold to me as a ’73, but the pots are dated December ’73 so I suspect it may have actually been completed early ’74. Although it is technically a ‘B’ neck, the nut width is a little less, around 1 9/32”.
This bass has a lot of character. My understanding is that the face of the headstock of Fender basses around this era were finished in nitro. This one has darkened over the years and developed a lot of finish checking. You don’t usually notice it, but I did get a photo of it in direct sun that really brings it out. Also, if you look closely at the headstock in the right light you will see the faint outline of the letters ‘USA’. I assume these were stickers that were applied at some point, but don’t really know. Over time that image has slowly faded. There are two holes in the body forward of the holes where the bridge cover was attached. I’m not sure what they were for, but I have seem people put a Jazz bridge cover on a P-Bass, so maybe that’s what happened here. Also, if you look closely at the upper horn, you will see where two small holes were filled. Another mystery, but the spacing is the same as the holes for the thumb rest. I've never seen a thumb rest installed there, but who knows? The original thumb rest and chrome pickup cover were long gone when I got the bass. The bridge cover may have been on the bass, but I honestly don't remember.
Bass comes with a hardshell tolex case which is in very good condition for its age. It does not have a Fender logo and the interior color is wrong for it to be the original, but it’s looks to be about as old as the bass.
Besides its excellent tone and playability, this bass is also light, especially for a 70’s P-Bass. It weighs 8 pounds, 8 1/2 ounces.
