This is your chance to get an actual vintage tour-ready Bean for less than $5000. I love this bass, but I just don’t have that many rock gigs at the moment and this doesn’t really suit the roots, country, and wedding gigs I do have.
I know this is an expensive bass and it’s had a lot of work done so I’m going to try and be as thorough as I can with the description. Please let me know if you have any questions at all about it and I’ll do my best to answer them! When I bought this it had a nasty white spray paint finish that had started to disintegrate and crumble away, the frets were completely toasted, and the electronics were failing, as well as one of the pickups being totally destroyed.
I have no idea what color the bass was originally. The guy I bought it from said it was one of 3 white prototypes Bean made (not true) and I also saw a older picture of him with a black TB2000, and I’m guessing it was the same bass. When I asked him about the black one he said he’d never tell. Weird guy. Some people didn’t get through the 80’s unscathed I suppose. During the refinishing process there was also what looked like maybe some red in there? So who knows. I liked the white color though so I had my tech (Omni Guitars in Michigan) strip and refinish it in a white pearlescent.
The refin isn’t perfect and I’ll try to capture the imperfections in the photos. Where the body meets the neck on the back is the main spot though.
I also bought an Aero replacement pickup that was a drop in, and he installed that in the bridge position. The neck is the original Bean pickup and works great. He redid all the pots and switch since what was in there wasn’t stock and was garbage. The original pickup will be included, but it might be beyond saving.
The previous owner had installed a P pickup between the bridge pickup and the bridge, and 3 mini switches in the control area. That was all plugged long before I bought it. You can see the outline of the P route if you’re within a foot or two of the bass, but the small holes for the mini switches are pretty well plugged.
The refret was a success and the bass plays like butter. There was a couple small spots of tear out on the rosewood, but he patched those well. There’s room on the bridge to lower the action, but much lower and you’ll run the risk of the strings hitting the pickups while you play. The action is currently low and playable.
A couple of the original tuners were slightly bent so I bought a set of the discontinued Schaller ultralight tuners that were a drop in replacement. It also helped with the weight a little bit. The originals will be included.
Now for the good news. This Bean is under 10lbs, sounds amazing, and plays incredibly easily. It sustains like no other and is just the most hifi sounding bass I’ve ever owned. It totally has the huge low end and clarity that these are known for. And MASSIVE output. The 33 1/4” scale length makes the strings slightly slinkier and the neck is very narrow and thin. It will come with what I believe to be the original hardshell case, though it’s in pretty rough shape.
