For sale is my 1998 Dean Performer Plus Acoustic Electric Bass. I bought it used in 2001 or 2002. This was considered to be an upgraded version to the standard Performer bass.
The difference in the Plus model verses the standard Performer are as follows:
1. It has upgraded electronics with Fishman classic 4.
2. A smaller and thinner body making it less bulky and comfortable to play.
3. The Performer Plus is a 32" scale bass verses the 34" scale in the regular Performer
4. Abalone inlays on the fretboard, headstock and sound hole
5. Gloss finish
6. Binding
I decided to have the fretboard glossed shortly after getting the bass. I wanted the bass to have a brighter tone, cleaner attack and longer sustain. It did just that. At the time, I hired Brown's Guitar Factory to do the work and John Brown decided to add gloss finish to the bridge so it would match the fretboard.
This bass has been well maintained over the years. The 28-year old wood has aged like a fine wine and the tone coming from the sound hole is fabulous! The frets are still great with no noticeable wear. Cosmetically speaking, you'll be surprised at how clean and undisturbed it looks for a bass of this age. Only one small nick on the bottom of the bass. It's an inch long, the width of a strand of hair and doesn't even go through the finish.
I just did a fresh set up and put on some brand new strings. Nut width is 1 5/8".
Comes with an original hardshell Dean case. I will note that as the case got older, the neck portion of the case was narrowing and the sides were applying pressure on the tuners. I have no idea how that happened.
So in 2015 I made a brace out of 4" x 3/4" wooden block and cut the length to be slightly wider than the inside of the case. That brace pushed the sides of the case out slightly so the headstock and tuners would fit comfortably inside the case. I covered the brace with similar black fur so it matched. That did the trick!
