I bought this one just over a year ago from Cream City Music, and have only played it out a handful of times since then. It really is a fantastic bass with one of the nicest necks I’ve played, but I’ve got too many and I mainly play a 5 string.
It’s in good condition with various nicks and scratches on the body and neck—some areas with finish worn down to the wood. Also, one of the tuners is slightly bent. Nothing unseemly, just honest wear throughout the years notwithstanding the decades old refin. The body looks like alder and has a back-friendly weight to it (~9 lbs). The neck has a some subtle flame, and the fretboard is also nicely figured. It’s got a comfortably broken-in feel to it, and very good resonance and sustain.
Since its purchase, I’ve had the frets leveled and dressed, and sent the whole bass to Erik Anderson of Sky Guitars (Warpedneck.com) to work his magic on some trouble spots in the neck. It was a nice bass when I first got it, but now feels amazing with low even action across the neck (1.75-2mm from g to E @12fret)
As was very common in the 70s, the body was eventually stripped and given a natural nitro finish. The back of the neck was lightly oversprayed, leaving the headstock face and logo untouched, though. It has some non-original mods, namely a vintage 5-ply pickguard (old WD I think), Dimarzio PAF Model J pickups (old and rickety, but sound great), vintage Dunlop strap locks, and an older Badass II bridge (~19mm spacing. I’ll also include the vintage style bridge pictured below). The rest is believed to be original to the bass, including the case (pics of case).
Overall, this is seriously a great player with a really cool vibe, and it’s totally gig ready. If you prefer single coil pups, I have some gray bottom pickups from a 1964 Jazz bass that I could swap out for $700. I also have an older set of Fralin split coils with steel bottom plates that I can swap out the Model Js for $100—just let me know.
