Here I have a stunning example of a 1965 Fender Jazz Bass. It is all original except for a refret and new nut.
Weight 8.5 lbs
The frets were replaced by Mass Street Music in Lawrence, Kansas. Mass Street is the local super duper expensive musical instrument store, and their luthiers are the only folks I trust doing this kind of work. They pushed the frets out sideways (same way there were installed), and installed true to early 60’s spec fretwire, and made a new nut. The bass is Plekked, yeah, it’s amazing.
Besides that, EVERYTHING is original. The finish, wiring, pickups, knobs, tuners, pickguard and bridge are original. Yes, even the pickguard screws are original.
The neck is stupid thin. I mean pencil thin, yet very very stable. It has survived winters and summers with me, and never requires a drastic truss rod adjustment.
This bass is strung with 2 year old Olinto flats, and sounds just like John Paul Jones and Joe Osborn.
Selling because I work 12 hour nights in a factory, and I don’t gig as much as I used to. Plus, I am kind of afraid to gig this lol. This instrument needs to be played and gigged!
The bass will ship with 2 packages, one for the original case, and the other with the bass in a very nice Road Runner case with humidifier packets by Daddario. This is not optional, as I will guarentee this bass gets to you in one piece, which I don’t trust the original case to do.
The pickups and wiring is original with unbroken solder joints. I have a pic of the wiring, but not the pickups as I don’t want the leads to come off. The pickups are original grey bobbins, and I have seen them both with my own eyes. I guarentee that they are original, as I have seen the bottoms.
The neck has the very rare Paduak fingerboard. Yes, this was a thing. Fender in the summer of 65 was experimenting with replacing the Brazilian Rosewood that was endangered and hard to come by, so a lot of these with June to August neck stamps had Paduak fingerboards. No, it is not dry rosewood, I oiled the board using a light coat of dunlop fretboard oil 2 months ago.
The tip of the pickgaurd is broken off, as is the case with most early 60’s Jazz Basses.
The truss rod is barely being used, no washers or any of that BS, I have heavier gauge Labella Olinto flats on this bass, and the truss rod is barely being used. Decades of life left. The bass has a stewmac shim to get optimal action. I have the bass set up with 0.008” relief and 5/64” of string height at the 17th fret on all of the strings. This bass being Plekked, it does not buzz. It’s just perfect, no neck or body dive.
Includes original ash trays.
The case is the original “no logo” case from this era, and is in great shape aesthetically and functionally.
Price is $9,100 shipped conus. Signature will be required for both packages. I do not mind holding onto this bass if it doesn’t sell. No trades, please.
