I purchased this bass late last year to "round out" my growing Spector collection with the four-string that it seems every bassist was using when I starting to play in the late '80s (and was then unavailable to purchase due to "Spector-By-Kramer's" bankruptcy but before the formation of Stuart Spector Designs/Spector Basses when I finally did have the money to buy one :scowl: It took me long enough and I'm making up for lost time
), but my rapidly growing desire, purchase and absolute lust for my recently acquisition, a ReBop 4 DLX EX Zebrawood has left this with little playing time in the past few months. It's far too nice a bass to sit in my rack collecting dust between string changes and polishing, so I'd like a player to give her more use than I am.
Natural Oil finished Alder body, 3 piece Graphite-reinforced neck which is a wonderfully stable neck in terms of climate changes - I've lived in both the Summer heat and humidity of Eastern Kentucky and currently Akron, Ohio within the past several years, both of which have humid Summers and cold-but-varying temperatures in Winter and they hold up quite nicely with only a tweak or two to maintain a very low setup. 2/3rds of a bottle of Behlen Master Gel Clear Finish will be included: in case of any wear (above-the-pickup-thumbrest-marks, for example) the bass can easily be sanded down and refinished to a virtually new state.
It's from what I refer to as the "1st Generation" of the Spector ReBops, which I differentiate as 4 and 5-strings made with the solid Alder body wood, dot inlays, and (usually) an Aguilar OBP-1 preamp from 2002 -2004. Around the end of that period the ReBop Dlx FM was introduced, adding to the bass the Flame Maple or Exotic Wood transparent tops and trademark Spector crown inlays, but the originals are still a fantastic deal on the used market as well as having a superb "Hunk 'O Tone" Alder body that's light and resonates very nicely due to the Natural Oil finish Spector uses (as opposed to the prototypical heavy Poly finish some companies I won't name *do* use) with the enhanced low-mids found on bolt-on basses, IMO. Other that that, it's got the same features that newer ReBops do: Czech craftsmanship, fully carved body, pickups, preamp and hardware, 5-bolt deep inset Maple neck and Rosewood fretboard.
...However, I know that by far the complaint most fans have is regarding the EMG HZ pickups/Spector TonePump preamp combo that comes with this line (and apparently Spector does as well - word is a internal trimpot is being added so that the gain that's been killing us all will so be able to be lowed
) so the ReBop has been equipped with 2 Active EMG 35CS pickups and EMG's BTS System which features a balance control (blend) and master volume with the bass and treble on separate pots. Between the "Mostly Classic" tone of the CS-series (loaded with Steel magnets that "...have a smoother attack and a flatter high end (that) are the most 'Traditional' sounding of the group") as well as the BTS System that offers the active bass and treble tone that only EMGs can and the fairly non-traditional aspects of a bolt-on Spector constructed of Alder, it's a combination of classic design aspects along with the uniqueness of the pickups and electronics that make it a great bass that's usable for many different styles of music.
By-and-large I'm looking for a sale and not trade, but the few things I can be swayed by are newer Avatar Neo Line-X coated cabinets (2x10", 2x12", and 4x10") plus cash on whomever's side depending on the size/price, a Fender American Deluxe Jazz 4 or 5-string in Candy Tangerine with a Maple 'board plus money from me, or a Dean Edge Hammer 10X 10-string bass (5-string coursed Root/Octave like an 8 or 12-string, not 10 individual strings from F#-Eb )

7/27/08 Update: Due to many inquires for this bass but no sale as of yet, I'm now offering your choice of either $50 off the original asking price (now $500), the $79.99 Hipshot GB-7 Bass Xtender now included and installed for only $30 extra! (a $50 price reduction), or a Spector-brand gigbag, depending on whichever would suit your personal needs. Considering that this bass has over $300 worth of EMG pickups and electronics in it already, you'd be getting a killer Active EMG Spector for only $200! At this point I'm truly torn as to selling it for so little considering the value of all the aftermarket parts installed and how great it sounds and plays and very well may cancel the auction at any time if I feel it's not worth loosing it for so little.
