This is a true example of a great 60's era P-Bass. Sunburst finish on alder body with rosewood board. Comes with original Fender hard case. All original in excellent condition for it's age. Frets are in good shop, neck is perfect. There is some buckle rash on the back and bumps here or there but this thing is truly in excellent shape. Here is the amazing part...it only weighs 8.2 pounds!

EDIT: I did talk to the original owner and the tuners were swapped out at some point in the 70's. As it turns out, he was able to locate them. So, they will be installed on the bass and will be included for the buyer.

$6500 plus shipping.

It is the original finish. This thing was babied by the original owner. The bridge cover is even original. The pickup cover and thumb rest are missing though.

This was one of those true "closet finds"

Looks real sharp. I'm no expert on 65s, but I do own an April '66 that I bought new. Comparing the 2, the items I would question would be the tuners - mine are shaped a little differently with no Fender on them with the long shafts. Also the elephant ear part of the tuners is a seperate piece that is bolted on the shaft. The only other thing that I see is the neck plate - mine has the numbers, but with the F script logo on it. The volumne and tone controls also appear to be changed. Not sure you wanted the comparison, but felt you may have a few areas that might be suspect. Good luck. :cool:

Yeah, the tuners should be the longer shaft, reverse style. I think they used those until 66 on the P basses. In 66 they used the paddle tuners on the jazz basses

I believe you are right. They are the same as the tuners on my 1973 P. I will look in my fender history book to check on date Fender began using these. I don't think they were used in the 60's, though I may be wrong.

Three of the tuners look to be replacements from the seventies and the other from the late sixties. If the headstock was not re-drilled the neck would have to be 66 or later (more likely 68 or later). There were a few 66-67 precisions that had ovals on them which had the same hole pattern. It is possible that this was originally one of those as a lot of people disliked the ovals at the time and would replace them with the newer clover leaf tuners. Only way to know any of this would be to remove the neck. Neckplate is definitely 65 or 64. Headstock logo looks like 65-67. Nice looking bass. Anyone serious about buying this will need to see date stamps though (pickups, pots and neck). Good luck with the sale.

When I got it, I did take the neck off and did verify that it is indeed stamped 65.

If anyone is really interested in buying the bass, I can take the neck off again and take a picture of it. The knobs are definitely the originals and were never changed. Fender basses in this era are always interesting as Fender was going through so many changes at the time. Fender was using parts and pieces from many different years through this time. If anyone has any additional questions, feel free to let me know.

You are correct on the knobs "rodneyat" - I went back and looked at a different pic and realized that there are reflections from other things that were showing in the pic I first looked at, making them appear to look like something else. :cool:

Just putting my 2 cents in. I bought a 65 back in about 75 for, your ready for this, $75 from a guy that polka band back in the 60s. Three houses down from mine.

Anyways to the point, that is the year, I believe that CBS bought them and it is important to know what month it is to determine Pre-CBS or not. That has quite an effect on the value. Mine was March and was Pre-CBS. I won't even get into what I did with it after having it for about 5 years....

As it turns out, he was able to find the original tuners. So, now the bass will ship with the correct 60's tuners on the bass. All is well is vintage fender-land now. :)
