Does this have the raised purpleheart stringer carved as a thumbrest? These things are a real hoot: David King fabricates his own hardware and if you remove headcap / string retainer, the entire truss rod slides right out.

This bass was mine for over a decade so I'm pretty familiar with it. No it doesn't have the integral thumbrest. It's a wonderful bass and I'd still have it if I were a better 5 string player. I still play a King 4 as my #1 bass. GLWTS to Tommyjbass! Ken

That's good because it was a bad idea...it was more of a speed-bump than a viable thumb rest. I had a local violin shop plane it down flush with the body face. FTR, I had the same model in a 36" scale. Beautiful bass and an excellent value!

I couldn't play mine well, as it wasn't my spec as well as I would like, but my other FIVE Kings I could play with NO ISSUES.

The thumb rest which ran parallel to the strings. The bass was constructed in such a way that the purpleheart stringer on the low B-side of the pickups was raised to create a shelf. Problem was that it was too far from the strings to be comfortable or practical. It was not my spec; I purchased it second-hand. I liked the bass bunches & bunches...it was the thumb rest which I found bothersome and that was a quick & inexpensive mod. Kickin' basses but the 36" scale became an obstacle...I no longer own it.

David King played this bass at one of my gigs in Vermont after not seeing her for 10+ years. His comment was: "yeah, this is one of the good ones"! It is.
