The MXR M81 is a handy unit half the size of most preamp/DIs with its feature set: Input Gain, Output Volume, Bass +/-, Mid +/-, Mid Frequency, Treble +/-, Ground Lift, and Pre/Post. It is a "clean" sounding preamp (no tube emulation or overdive). A little-known feature of the M81 is the option, if you wish, to run it as a "pure" phantom-powered active DI, bypassing the preamp and sending a pristine signal through the XLR out to a mixing desk. With all the boutique preamps on the market today, don't overlook this compact, reliable workhorse.
