I’ve owned just about every rackmount bass preamp, and the Peavey MAX was my favorite - tons of tonal options and flexible signal routing, but most of all, HUGE tone.
The MAX has two separate preamps; a tube side and a solid-state side.
The tube side is bright and can grind if you crank the input gain.
The solid-state side is fat and thick sounding.
You can switch between those sides, but my favorite option was always to combine them - SS for tight, clean lows and tune for bright, grindy highs…or SS for clean and tube for dirt; there are MANY options.
This MAX functions perfectly, but most of the original knobs were missing when I got it. The pots have an unusual 3/16” shaft, so I put tubing over the shafts so that I could use normal 1/4” knobs - and got multiple colors to correspond with each knob’s function.
There are also a couple screws that were stripped, so I’ve omitted the screws rather than have them rattle or fall out - I’ve highlighted them in my pics.
There are typical scratches from 25-30 years of usage, but Peavey built them strong and durable - and it’s ready to go!
