Good question I haven't thought about!

I think I have average girth hands and slightly longer than average fingers; I find the highest practical, usable fret to be the 22nd on this instrument. I should note, however, that a) I have been focusing more on chording for the past 18 months, so it's unusual to find me past 17 on any bass, and b) I've never been accused of being "busy" on bass. I use my 4-strings for pretty standard band configurations. So, I can't make a practical comparison.

I will say the notes on the fretboard are clear and intonate well all the way up to 24, as you would expect from a Skjold. But 23 and 24 are a slide/stretch for me on the high strings and not super easy to reach on the low strings.

Makes sense to me. Im the same way on a 4 string. Even 17th fret is rare haha. 5 string is a different ballgame for some reason.

How about neck dive? Pretty short upper horn on it.

I just love this design. The way it looks anyway. Petes stuff is incredible. But usually hes got that big upper bout on his basses for balance.

I also wondered about balance, but interestingly, it balances perfectly level on me! The belly cut hits just below my right rib in exactly the right spot, despite the strap button on the upper horn only reaching just past the 14th fret. Hands off, and without a particularly wide strap, it hangs straight and doesn't pull either way. If I look down, the 24th fret is centered on my body.

I don't think Pete solves for balance specifically by using a large upper bout, though every other Skjold I've played hit right at 12 with the strap button. He just knows how to leverage lightweight tuners and every other thing!

For a long time, I was really enamored of Jack Blades Hamer bass. It reminded me of my very first bass, a Cort Model X, in that it was a nearly parallel double cut. It didn't hurt that Night Ranger's heyday was during my high school years. The Hamer was (is?) 32" scale, which I've tried and liked in a couple of other makes... I suspect the Greyling's 33" scale (80% of my basses are 33's) also helps in that respect.

Took the Greyling out for a spin - it had its first gig just over a week ago, and it was most excellent. Two sets, and I was impressed with the tone, balance, and (almost above-all-else) the weight. So easy to jam on. I changed the La Bella tapewounds for flats, and like those even more. I have a theater show to play in August and have been rehearsing with it; I'm doubling, so a bass like this will be easy to manage in the pit.

However, I have a couple of basses that will do that gig, including a short scale jazz on loan from my daughter--I may need to replace the neons, though. (I like them okay, but they're not my favorite strings.)

So the Skjold is still for sale! Make me an offer I can't refuse.

Theater gig was great! I'm liking this bass more and more. Sold one of my other basses—removed my Reverb ad and will likely take this down next week. PM any questions.
