Whats the big difference between solid state and tube preamps?

Well apart from the circuitry, a valve preamp will give you 'valve overdrive' so your hybrid amp will sound just like an SVT (dripping with sacasm).

Hype aside some amps allow you to blend the clean and dirty preamps for some edge.

And some solid state amps sound better than tube preamps when you overdrive them. (G-K vs. Hartke in my experience)

Also you don't have to worry if the tube is still ok if there is no tube in your amp...
