Mellow not bright strings?

I'm looking for long scale, round wound strings that are:

1. Mellow - not bright (but still round wound)
2. Lower tension so I can use heavy gauge: .50 - .110"

Ring any bells?

Why exactly do you want roundwounds? To me, tapewounds seem like what you're after. Halfrounds would also be a good option.

Easy one... DR Sunbeams! Roundwound on a ROUND core, flexible and will mellow out nicely after a few weeks and stay there.

sunbeams sound dull to me so should work well for you. There also low tension.

I still want the option of having a little brightness from the JB. I'll use a P-Bass with flats if I want to go all the way. I've never played tapewounds so I'll check those out. And from what I've read here halfrounds sound better on paper than in real life. But that's subjective for sure.

DR could probably stay in business with the TalkBass fan crowd, alone. TB doesn't seem to be representative of the real world.

My vote goes to Dunlop Nickels. They break in fast and sound great for a long time. They cost almost half what Sunbeams cost (at bass strings online). You should give them a try.

Nickels were definitely in my future, I'm just looking to find a set with low tension 'cause the gauge is gonna tighten them up and snap my neck.

Sunbeams would probably be higher tension at the same gauges, but looser feeling due to core construction as round core strings tend to have higher mass than hex core strings... but between different manufacturers that don't publish the useful information it's hard to say.

Dunlops are less expensive, and they sound like broken in nickels out of the box and they sound like that for a while. Not my thing, but I know they have a place.

50-110 shouldn't endanger your bass if it's any decent model, even at 35", as long as your truss rod is working and isn't currently "Topped Out". Keep in mind that Load Tension and Perceived Tension are 2 different things. Round cores, even if they are a thinner core diameter are not necessarily lower in actual Load Tension... it depends on the total mass and wrap/core ratio. They usually however, will FEEL lower in tension than equivalent diameter hex cores because of how they respond and how they wrap interacts with the round core. Check out TI's site... they post their tensions on their sets and some sets are constructed to have a lower load tension.

Dunlop nickel. Nice tone, very little top end - works well on my Jazz Bass. The tension is low but not floppy. I like these strings, they are cheap and easy to find. I have just recently switched over to DR Low Beams - Nickel, very nice string.
