Go see Micheal Hartery. [email protected], 978 500 8848. I think he's in central Boston area, but i don't know. Anyway, he's worked on both of my basses in the past. He does good work. Smart guy too.
Welcome to town! You are clearly a smart bassist - finding a good luthier is right up there with getting a place to live.
There are several folks in the region. I will stick with my most recent personal experience.
+1 on Michael Hartery. I have been to him several times and have been well pleased.
His location is ideal for anyone living in town. He is in the Fort Point Channel area, which is easily accessible from just about anywhere, by any means of transportation.
He is timely, dependable, reasonably-priced, musical, and skilled. One could set one's watch by his completion dates. He has never been "late" on any of the work he has done on my bass.
He has both a BM from MSM and a Masters’ from UNT, and it has paid off. He is a strong, working bassist, who plays really well, from orchestral music to jazz. He is fluent with both French and German bows, and uses them interchangeably, based on the music/ensemble at hand.
As a luthier, he knows how to do just the right thing with minimal fuss. Strategic effort with high results.
He also ran the UNT bass shop for awhile, working on the 60+ instruments there, including Jeff Bradetich's, with whom he also studied.
I recommend Michael unconditionally.

I had Rutmans do some work on my Romanian carved new bridge, sound post adjustment, strings...it came back to me with a some buzzing, when I addressed it with him via email his responce was " you (I) never asked him to check for buzzes" My thoughts are after replacing a bridge a Luthier would play the bass and check for buzzing, and at the very least advise me of it with suggestions on fixing it.

You now have another fine Bass Luthier that just moved to the Boston area from NY, Jed Kriegel. Jed worked for several years along side Arnold Schnitzer at his shop and is just opening up his own shop there. I have a Bass just about to go into restoration under his skilled care as well.
I have seen many Basses up at Arnold's that Jed has restored and worked on 'solo' from top to bottom. He does the same grade work that you see coming from Arnold's shop.
He would be and is my pick if that's where you are located. The Bass I am giving him is quite old valuable and needs a full restoration of the Top, Back, Ribs, Neck Graft, Scroll repair and all the fittings. A huge job no doubt and I trust Jed will handle the task as good an anyone can.

Ok, +1 on Michael Hartery as well. I am here at Arnold's House posting on his computer. Mike is making the salad as I type. Arnold is cooking some fish. If their cooking is as good as their varnish and glue making, I will live to post again..

Repaired the tip, regripped, rehaired, and did some camber work on my Morizot. As close to perfect restoration work as any human can manage, IMHO. My bow is better repaired than ever and has a really nicely-gripping white hair.
Also a well trained, skilled, and talented bow maker. He makes a sweet and reasonably-price bass bow. A great local resource!

I don't know the exact address or phone but Arnold has it. Also, Mike H. is moonlighting down at Arnold's a couple days a week as well. I saw him working on a few Basses yesterday with Arnold. I expect that Arnold will still do some things with Jeff on occasion but just not in the same shop.
I see this as a positive thing as Arnold has turned out a few good Luthiers from his shop over the years till it's 'time to leave the nest' I guess.
