John East stomp box

The "Road-worthy" part of your post is what would make me say look elsewhere. I have a J-Retro Stomp, and unless there have been some major changes over the past few years, I wouldn't want to subject one to heavy road use. The case on mine, though sturdy, is still plastic, and not something I'd want seeing much time banging around in a gigbag or anything less than the sturdiest of pedalboards. The DI's XLR jack came loose w/in th first week of me having it. Steve "Dude" Barr was really good in this case in sending me a new jack and ground-lift switch, but I was always leery about it after that. Mine was a little awkward, too, because it was one of the first 20 or so produced, and the input and outputs were backwards from most pedals.

not much color really more of an EQ thing My preamp has been on back order for ever from bartolini so i hooked up my pup pasive and they still are pretty hot for the attack I have .As well as having very little more control over the the tone of the bass

Def. check out the EBS and Demeter comps. Check the reviews linked in my sig. The Sadowsky is great-sounding but the EQ is two-band, boost only, so it's kind of limited. It can only make your signal hotter. The Aguilar is more flexible.

Sounds to me like you want more of a compressor than an EQ/DI. If so, check out the Comp. review and megathread in Bongomania's signature. If you're looking for a little bit of all of the above, maybe something like the EBS Microbass II.
