Monte Allums Boss ODB-3 Tri-Gain mod - changes EVERYTHING

Just finished the ODB-3 Tri Gain mod from Monte Allums. The difference is night and day with sound of the pedal. Pretty happy so far, and that's just going in to the SVX plugin in Pro Tools. Can't wait to get it up to volume through an amp!

Anyhow, here's a quick and dirty clip. It's a Ric 4003 in to the modified ODB-3, then in to IK Multimedia SVX on the clean SVT Classic setting (ultra lo switch defeated) in Pro Tools.

The first 8 bars the "balance" and "gain" knobs are at 9:00 on the pedal.

At bar 9, a 4 bar chorus section - balance and gain is at noon.

Then back to 8 bars at 9:00.

The last chorus section, at bar 21, the balance and gain are all the way up. It's a little much.

that sounds pretty solid. no idea what, if anything, the ampeg plug is doing to help, but i could definitely see that being pretty usable. kinda sansampy with a more gritty texture and without the sheen on the top.

I should have done a "clean" version, but I was having too much fun!

The Ampeg model is completely clean. No grit whatsoever. The actual SVX patch is called "ROCK SVT-CL 1". I turned off the Ultra Lo switch.

This modded pedal is also great for guitar. Sounds better than most guitar ODs I've heard, so it could serve double duty for guitar and bass.

I know Trust me, it's not even close to the same pedal now. I used to have to work at getting anything usable out of it, now the problem is too many choices. Every tone is interesting! Truly a night and day difference.

I modded one of those guys a few years back. I used Brian Wampler's pedal mod guide to reduce the shrillness of the highs & increase bass. It was a simple cap increase & resistor swap, but oh the change!

Idk what the Monte Alums mod actually is, cap & resistor value-wise, only what I've read that it does, but I'd assume the same caps & resistor that I changed are the same here. I didn't upgrade/change the op amps, which I'm sure makes some difference too. Also, I've NEVER had a pedal with a dual chip op amp mod...

What do you feel the impact of the dual IC chips was, if you can single that out?

To be honest, I'm just good at following directions. He could tell me to solder it to my forehead and I'd probably do it So I'm not sure the impact of the stacked chips, although the pedal is completely improved with his kit. He says in the instructions that you can take out one of the chips to save battery power.

Yep, I am going to do this too soon. I just did a monte allums mod on the OD-3 for my guitar and it just smokes other overdrives I've heard.

That ODB-3 clip you did sounds pretty righteous- good sparkly warm grind and lots of note clarity. Thanks for posting that!

You can order the kit online. I did. Just haven't modded the pedal yet. I'm a bit nervous about it since I haven't done anything like this before, but fortunately I have a friend with an electronics degree who's going to hold my hand while I install the mods.

It sounds like it has its usefulness, but too much of the snuffy sizzle is taken out for my tastes.

I have a stock ODB, which I love so much, and I also loved the demo of yours. Is it possible to mod it so it will retain the original shrill and harshness AND having the ability to turn it down until it sounds like the demo? Not really good at electronics, but I figure it would come in a form of a switch where I can simply select the original sound or the modded sound

Awesome tone. I can't believe how much that mod changes the character of the pedal. Sounds so much more controlled in that sample, very thick and clear at the same time and all of that annoying fuzz is gone. Sounds a lot more Sansamp-ish now, but with mids.
I'd really love to hear another sample with clean sound A/B'd, without the SVX.

Now I regret selling mine, I could've tried screwing around with modding it, it sure seems to be damn worth it.
