Let me start by saying that I am a dumbass and feel like one so please don't just bash me.
Today after much deliberation I purchased a G&L L2000 from a pawn shop in So. Cal. It is a beautiful bass and was recommended by some here on TB which I truely appreciate and there was no way for them to know the flaws of the bass. I was driving home with my family from vacation and swung by the shop since it was only 50 miles out of my way, where I would have to drive 120 miles tomorrow. We had been on the road for about 9 hours and as i pull up to the shop my 5 year ols says she needs to go to the bathroom really bad. We are 10 miutes away from my sisters house so I run in check out the bass, plug into a cheap practice amp play a few notes and buy the bass. I thought I had done all of my research and felt really good about it.
I get home and plug into my amp and it sounds good. I try to turn down the volume and nothing happens. Tone knobs....nothing. Switches...parallel/series kinda works but they are oriented weird (more side to side, not up and down). I open up thecover, which strangely still has plastic on it and find the worst hack job of wiring that I have ever seen! (see pics). My heart sank!! Me-->
Now I am suspicious of everything on the bass.
The neck seems legit. The serial # starts with CLFXXXXX which is for "Clarence Leo Fender" which I believe they only use on USA basses. It is maple with a bird's eye fretboat and a vintage tint gloss finish ($450 in upgrades). It has some flames drawn and some letters on the heel of the neck (see pics).
The body has a quilted maple top ($750 upgrade) and and honeyburst finish. In the neck pocket is stamped May 05 2004 with a "W" underneath it. Some of the flames that were drawn on the neck are visible in the neck cavity. The sharpie wasn't quite dry when the neck went on. I hope that means that is the original USA neck and body from 2004. If that's the case I may work through the problems since I priced this out to be about a $2,600 bass MSRP and I got it for $750.
Now for the bad, the wiring. It seems like some tweaker owned this bass at some point and decided to see if the could take it completely apart and put it back together. It is really bad and it seems like parts are missing (preamp). (I compared it to my tribby L2500). How can I tell if these are the original parts? The pups have PAT. 4220069 on them. I can't make out any distinguishing marks on the pots. I don't know why anyone would change them out, but I also don't know why anyone would do this to this bass after paying $2k for it.
