In desperate need of help!!! (G&L content)

The inner coils are punchier and sound more solid to me. They sound better soloed to me as well.

I don't know how things are with USA G&L wiring and what the "series" setting sounds like, but on L2000/L2500 Tribute basses the series setting hum canceling is fatter and middier than parallel with less treble. The K-mode or OMG mode sounds like a wide and deep single-coil because all of the treble from one coil gets shunted to ground through a .1 mfd capacitor while the other one retains the treble. It's fat and clear, and you can have it go from spanky Jazzish/P-ish with the bass rolled down or up to thunderous with bass full up - all while being clear.

I pulled my preamp and now have separate parallel/inner coil/series switches for each pickup and a pickup selector switch. I replaced my volume pot with a 250k push/pull which, when down, puts the series mode into K-mode and when up it's in hum canceling series mode. This gives me a lot of options and the original look of the bass is retained. What you could do is use a 4PDT on/on/on switch in place of the stock series/parallel switch to give you parallel/inner singles/series, and use a 250k push/pull switch for switching between balanced series and K-mode.

I've got a wiring diagram that I made for this mod if you want. I also just happen to have an extra 250k push/pull switch since the Ebay seller I bought one from ended up sending me two. All you would need is a 4PDT on/on/on switch and I could help you find one of those if you like.

Thanks for the heads up on the switch! G&L was going to send me their 3 way switch which I now understand won't work. I just ordered this switch Invalid Link Removed and it will ship today. I will order the preamp later today when G&L opens and that should ship today too. It's all coming together now!

No problem. Good choice on that switch - that's the perfect one. G&L's 3-way switch is just a DPDT on/on/on and you can get the same switch for $3 on Ebay. Are you going to stick with K-series or do you want both (so, you need a push/pull pot)?

Here's the diagram for doing parallel/inner singles/series/single coil with bass boost.

If you're going to use a push/pull pot for activating/deactivating the K-mode, and you want K-mode on when the knob is down, then have them wire the switch so that the caps are attached on the end opposite the potentiometer.

Sorry man, this is all way over my head. When I took my bass to the tech I showed him the daveplaysbass mod #8 and he said he could do it no problem if I got him the switch. I like the sound samples I've heard from the outer coils and am going to give that a try. I'm coming from a J and a P so the L2k already has WAY more options than I'm used to, I just figured while he's under the hood why not spend an extra $25 for an additional option. I like the idea of having a J-ish tone (I know it won't do a J exactly) since that is the tone I am most drawn to.

Oh, and thank you for all of your help! I really do appreciate it!

Glad it's all working out for you. But still, what a hassle, eh? Did the seller really think you'd never notice the dead controls?

Seems like the tricksters ooze out of the woodwork around the holidays. I bought three basses this week, two off ebay and one here. All three were misrepresented by the sellers. :rolleyes:

AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

I got my switch (2 days after I ordered it) and now I am just waiting on the preamp from G&L. I ordered it a week ago, I emailed asking for a tracking number 2 days ago. After a day and a half of no response I called and they said they would follow up and email me the tracking #. Today no response. It can't be that hard to throw a preamp in a box and slap a shipping label on it. I only live about 80 miles from the factory, so when it ships I'll get it in a day or 2. This is agonizing!

Not to confuse you any more, but just to give you another data point, let me say that I had wired my tribute with the single coil mod where you can choose between inner and outer coils in single coil mode. This takes an additional switch and since it was a trib I figured I wouldn't be too reluctant over drilling an additional hole for the extra switch. Worked great.

But then I got a couple of USA G&Ls and was VERY reluctant to start drilling non-factory holes in them. And by then I had noticed that for some reason I almost always preferred the tone of the outer rather than inner coil setting. I mentioned that on TB and people seemed divided over which they liked best inner, or outer, but oddly nobody really seemed to want both available. So I just did the standard outer coil K-mod on the Trib as well as on the USAs. What can I say. I love it. Needs no new holes in the bass (push pull on the knob is a nice way to avoid holes too!) and sounds great. I use the clarity of tone you get with the single option a LOT. I put an LED in the extra hole in my Trib as a pilot light for my TRS "phantom" power from the amp. I'm pretty satisfied at the moment with this setup.

Just saying.

Just got the call from the tech. The bass is done!!!!!!!!!!! Pre-amp in, K-mod done!!!!!!! It was a hassle for sure, but the bottom line is I got the bass with k-mod in perfect working condition for $810! Now I just have to wait until Monday to go pick it up.

Congratulations. I just quickly scanned this thread, and I gotta say, that is one of the sweetest looking G&L's I have ever seen.

I don't understand this preoccupation with losing money on an instrument. Unless you are a highly paid professional, you are ALWAYS going to lose money, over time, in the long run, being a player. Sure there may be that occasional deal, but people, THAT'S WHAT MONEY IS FOR. $810 sitting in an account somewhere does nothing for you. Holding, viewing, playing an awesome bass, that's priceless.

Not to derail here but, I have owned 27 basses in the last couple of years. Still have 11, so sold 16. Of them all, I lost money on the 2 that I bought brand new (back at the beginning, before I learned better). Of the rest, I have made money on almost all of them. At most, I have lost the cost of the shipping to get a bass to me.

It really is not that hard to be patient and find good deals on used stuff.

To the OP: Nice bass! I love my G&Ls. Yours is a beauty. I bought my L-2500 used from GC. It had a bad truss rod. I ended up returning it, then buying it back for $200. Then I sent it to G&L and got a new neck put on and got the K mod wiring done at the same time. It is now one of my favorite basses. I've done a few band auditions in the last year or so and it is the bass I have taken each time just because it's the bass most likely to be able to change up on the fly and produce whatever sound the band wants. It IS the Swiss Army Bass. :D
