Does a bad seventies polyurethane refin' of a '55 that I played the "ever
living heck out of" count as relic'd? The poly did wear off on a spot that
is now under the pickguard.....

Thanks for the kind words. Sadly, the truth is far from that. :scowl:
I got it in '73. It sounds really fine. The wood, which I believe is ash,
is very very porous, and the finish does not fill it, so there is dirt in
the grain. There are huge runs/sags of poly on the back and even around the bridge.
The wood, especially on the top contour, has been sanded in a very
uneven and amateurish way. There is damage to the top, although
minor, hidden under the pickguard. The headstock has been sanded
free of the decal, and the back of the neck has been oversprayed and
feels really bad, because the overspray is coming off.
The poly has gotten extremely yellow over the years, and not in a
good way. The wood is basically greyish white, not yellow. After much
thought, I have decided to have the finish restored by RSGuitarworks.
After having been two color sunburst, then pink, and then poly, it will
be returned to nitro sunburst (brown and yellow), with the appropriate
"relic'd" aging for an instrument that has been played a lot by me
since '73.
So this one will be relic'd in another way, should be done in a few weeks.
Got her in '75 in Grand Forks, North Dakota (in a pawn shop - with an abused twisted neck - $90) while 'on the road' - was SUPER beat-up bluish-green metallic. Bought a new '73 Maple Neck when back in St. Paul - stripped and polyurethane finished. Played 5-6 nights a week for 8+ years with P-J mod early 80's added active EMGs (volume pots only) in the early 90s - definitely the best sounding and playing bass in my stable. Leonard Shapiro Guitar Repair in Minneapolis does all my Bass maintenance, can't thank him enough! All dents and discolorations have BEEN EARNED!

Here's mine. An '83 SQ series Squier P (first year MIJ.) The pick guard is not original and the volume knob is a replacement, but there is plenty of mojo in her.
I hope someone starts another thread like this one in a couple of weeks. By then I'll have my '69 P back from the refinisher. Been waiting a year (literally) for it!
