Hey everyone, I got a bass for Christmas, never knew what a bass was till last year, I am 14, and I have fallen in love with "The Low End" as some people describe it as, and I am thinking of buying a new bass, I really dig the P bass tone, I just love it to death. I cant narrow down what I should go after however, it will either be a Squier VM P Bass in Amber, I really think its a nice combo, and sounds good for $280. Then I was also considering saving up and getting a Squier CV 60's P bass in Sonic Blue, Ive heard alot of good reviews about the Classic Vibe series, espically the 60's P Bass. My last option was to maybe buy a nice used Fender MIM P Bass, Ive heard from people that alot of Fender MIM P basses are either a hit or miss kinda bass.I am ultimately probably going to swap out the stock P/U and put in a Quarter Pounder on whatever bass I choose to get. What are your thoughts and opnions ? Is it worth getting a Fender? Or are the Vintage Modifieds good for the money ? or better yet, Am I better off going for the Classic Vibe ?

Squier VM,CV, or a Fender ?

I have the amber Squier VM P-bass, and I love it. Recommended.
All I can truthfully tell you is to try them all out if you can, that's the only way to be sure (The truth is you'll probably do well with any one of those.)
Oh, and one other thing, don't swap anything out until you've played the thing for a while. You may find it won't need it, whatever bass you get. My Squier VM basses (I have two, the P + the J) are dead stock and I have no plans to change anything on it, because IMO, they don't need it. The stock Duncan Designed pickups on the VM's are excellent as is..

I absolutely recommend the Amber VM P bass. I recommend it over any MIM Fender and definitely over the blue Classic Vibe.
Sorry, but I just hate that bass. I don't like anything about it. The fiesta red CV P bass is pretty decent, but the Amber VM P is the best sub-$300 bass I've ever played.
I chose both the Precision & Jazz CV over MIM Fender Standards. For me, the Classic Vibe basses I've picked up and played every trip to a music shop that had them always had better fretwork, neck, build, and quality over the Vintage Modified series. They also have tinted necks if you're into that.
I would highly recommend spending the extra on a Classic Vibe. You can always swap out the pickups later if they don't suit your tastes (like I did with mine), and the quality is worth the extra $80 or so.

If you have access to a used MIM fender locally that is for sale, for chrissake play it before you make a decision. You occasionally get a good one that is way better than it should be for the $. You might win the lottery. If you have to buy without playing first, get the CV. The VM's are ok, but the smaller fretwire in the CV's really do make for a nicer feeling neck once you get the instrument dialed in.
The CVs are great, especially the Jazz bass... MiMs get a lot of knocking here but I found a superb example... £250 secondhand.
Nothing wrong with the Mexicans, they're just not as nice as the American Standards. I believe they are in general better built than any of the Squiers, including the CV and the VMs. However, for the money, the CV and VM Squiers are a great deal, no question.
there is reason why fender are fenders ,i have a 92 mex and its great < sounds better and brighter than my 73 usa jazz! im the same as u , like decisions decisions...every muso goes thru that, up to now i was like jazz or p jazz or p ?? ive gone with jazz,thinnner neck etc , play the guitars 1st , p basses are nice, i dropped a pair of toneriders in my mex jazz and its great!! i also like playing a bass guitar that says fender on the head... thats just me lol, im such a poser lol

I would go with the VM, That natural finish with the maple board make for a great looking bass. I would pick up a tort pick guard while your at the store. Personally I would skip the Q-pounder, and opt for a fender 62, or a Rio Grand vintage or muy grande depending on what sound you are going for.
