In 2007 Ed Roman built Dave a custom instrument designed with most of the same features and specs as the "Fendenbacker" (see below), with a Rickenbacker-like body shape but with a Fender scale length and neck width and more of a Fender body contouring.
Dave's main bass previous to the new Ed Roman bass is what he terms his "Fendenbacker". It's a Rickenbacker 4001 bass that's been severely modified to serve a variety of purposes. "A buddy of mine found a really trashed Ric in a pawn shop, and I turned it into a project bass to try to make a 'one bass fits all' for myself" says Meros.
It has a set of Fender Jazz Bass pickups set in mid-'70s-era spacing (the bridge pickup moved closer to the bridge than in previous incarnations, giving the bass a "tighter" and more midrange tone) as well as the standard set of Rickenbacker pickups in the traditional Ric positions. This gives Meros four pickups total to choose from, with a switch that chooses between the two fairly different "basses", Rickenbacker or Jazz. All four can also be activated at the same time. A BadAss bridge, Hipshot Bass Xtender (otherwise known as a "Hipshot D-Tuner" or simply a "Hipshot" or "D-Tuner" among bassists) for its ability to downtune the low E-string of a bass typically to D at the flip of a lever) and a string mute that Meros can raise or lower with thumb screws (which were fabricated by Meros himself) were also added.

Apparently Ed Roman Guitars endorses the bassist here, Dave Meros. Check out this link and scroll all the way down, at the bottom it says "Here Dave is playing a custom Ed Roman, Abstract Bass from 1998."

Not me. I'd rip all the guts out of a rick and replace everything about it basically if I ever got my hands on one for enough to make that an economically feasible idea.
He's only one or two pups shy of having a Bootsy-approved bass. What a shame to be so close and not go all the way.
But he shouldn't feel bad about that, because he's got an Ed Roman endorsement, which more than makes up for not having more than four pickups on your bass.

If you listen to their CDs, some of their songs sound like a jazz bass, and others like a Rickenbacker. Sometimes in the same song you can hear where he switches back and forth between the two. I've always thought this would make a great production instrument if somebody would make them. It sounds awesome.

That tone is the kind of tone everyone THINKS Rics sound like, the kind of thing that Geddy and Chris Squire made famous. But they have way more tones than that! That's probably my least favorite "Ric sound".
Oh well--definitely a cool bass, that Ed Roman. I wonder if the pickups are RWRP paired too? Interesting.

One thing about Chris Squire is that he'd actually hit the string with his pick AND finger on longer notes, giving a more pleasing tone to them, which is one thing this guy apparently doesn't do. Not knocking him, he's good and all, just throwin' that in.
But yeah, that thing sounds spectacular. Hey, Nino, since you got the skills you should try and come up with something similar. I'm too poor to buy it but I'm sure someone would.

Everybody on here that does not own some Spocks Beard CD's or DVD's should go buy some NOW. Prepare to be blown away. Just keep in mind there are two 'phases' of the band. Pre Neil Morse, and post Neil. What you see in the vid is post Neil, and overall the better version. If you listen to Beard when Neil was in the band, then listen to Neil's solo stuff you realize that 'Beard' was just Neil with a backing band. Now it's a full band effort, and it's some of the best stuff out there. Neil's solo stuff is good as well, but it all tends to sound the same.
