It's not the pickups, it's their placements that determine the tone. The pickups are in this order:

RIC NECK PICKUP
JAZZ NECK PICKUP
RIC BRIDGE PICKUP
JAZZ BRIDGE PICKUP

Everybody on here that does not own some Spocks Beard CD's or DVD's should go buy some NOW. Prepare to be blown away. Just keep in mind there are two 'phases' of the band. Pre Neil Morse, and post Neil. What you see in the vid is post Neil, and overall the better version. If you listen to Beard when Neil was in the band, then listen to Neil's solo stuff you realize that 'Beard' was just Neil with a backing band. Now it's a full band effort, and it's some of the best stuff out there. Neil's solo stuff is good as well, but it all tends to sound the same.

Edit: just realized it's 'Neal' and not 'Neil'.

Pre-Neal? I think you mean just Neal and post-Neal.

I hear what you're saying about being more of a band effort now without Neal, but IMO they're still sorely lacking comparatively to when he was their frontman/leader. Nick is doing his best, but he doesn't have the same charisma/star quality.

Regardless of the scale length of the instrument, the Ric pickup positions are where the 24th and 36th frets would be. Those are octave harmonic node points, so you can find them by just plucking the string and finding the harmonics.

My understanding it the pawn shop Rick Dave Meros customized worked for a while, then developed problems Dave couldn't handle. So he got the Roman bass to use while Roman fixed that Rick. Presumably, Dave has that Rick back now and no longer needs the Roman bass.

I've got all the Beard cds, and all the Neal Morse cds, and while I see your point, I'd like to point out that the Live post-Neal Beard cd has a noticeable amount of off-key singing, while the Live Neal dvd is performed to his usual very high standards. Also, IMO, they were more than just a 'backup band', and together they were better than they are apart. I wouldn't call Genesis Peter Gabriel's backup band, either.
