What causes this crack?

Hi Guys & Gals,

I´m sorry for the crappy pics, but I have a crack that runs below the fretboard on both sides of the neck. This runs for about the first 2 frets on one side, and first 3 frets on the other.

What causes this crack?

Is it (easily) fixable?

what kind of a bass is it? Is it nitro finished? The does look like standard nitro checking. It can happen at any wood joint due to different rates of expansion of the two pieces of wood due to temp and humidity.

The color coat finish on that neck overlaps the glue joint between the fretboard and neck wood, which is why the crack is in the color part of the finish.

It´s a cheapo bass, so I doubt it is Nitro. I was planning on sanding the neck on this bass as I don´t like the painted finish, but then I saw the crack.

Any ideas on how to proceed with this?

Thanks

Thanks for the input!!

My guess is the cheap glue and/or humidity, as I have had this Bass for 5 years, and the crack appeared recently, wothout anyone touching the truss rod.

Anyone know of somebody on the forum who has fixed this? Do I need to take of the fretboard and reglue it? Or is this just aesthetical?
