TalkBassers in real life

It's been a while in terms of years and distance, but I met quite a few between 2007 when I joined TB, through early 2020. We all know what happened then, but also since then I've moved from Chicago to central NC where the TBers are more spread out.

There were also more TB-focused GTGs back in the day in Chicago, and also a couple of big international GTGs in NYC; I went to the latter events in '08 and '09 (RIP to the legend @BassyBill). Altogether, I've met upwards of 50 TBers in person (maybe 100). All were cool and more than happy to let me try their gear. In-person deals have been smooth as well.

I met a handful years ago at a DC area GTG. Although I never met him in person, I use to talk on the phone for hours at a time with the late great Thor. Funny thing is, we never really talked much about bass, mostly just life. Great guy RIP brother!
Thor knew my brother in RI pretty well and we once ran into him at an open mic he was running in Newport while I was visiting. Somehow we didn't put it together, although over the years we had interacted quite a bit here on TB. Years later we shared a few phone calls and then we eventually had a great hang at a RI GTG. Super cool and very funny guy, no doubt.

I met @MultiScaleMale after he posted about acquiring a new Kubicki. We were comparing notes as I have a very early (pre-Fender) model. We don't live far from each other and I was playing a gig near him and he brought his Kubicki to my gig! Not only did he let me play it, he let me take it home! Wow! What a great experience! BTW, @MultiScaleMale - I just moved to Scaggsville, so we're practically neighbors! Hit me up! We can go to Looney's or wherever for lunch!

I've had in-person sales or purchases from 3 TB members, they were all cool and the deals went well.

I followed another TB member into a band after he left for personal/health reasons. We're still in touch from time to time via TB PM. Nice guy and a great bass player.

I had a one degree of separation connection with another, fairly well known TB member (who has his own YT bass channel and now works for Darkglass). A keyboard player and Korg employee I gig with met him at NAMM this year.

So, I guess I have met a few TB members in the flesh ... which is saying something for a skeleton with a Jazz bass

Heck, that Yammy is certainly worth a bout of tug-of-war.
Sure is 😎 for the record, that one is his, but I do have one of my own just like it … which I purchased from @Calebmundy. While I did not meet him in person, I learned he had the instrument through an in-person friend of mine from my pre-internet childhood, a fellow professional in Nashville.

@Isaac_James and I got to know each other through TalkBass and get along far better than this image would suggest.
A big bonus of meeting Isaac was that our families immediately hit it off as well. As it turns out, we have far more in common than our Yamahas 😁

Not in person but have become friends w/ @bassdude51, who lives just up the road a couple hours. Great conversations via phone w/ lots in common, including our love for early slabs. 🤘 But wait there's more..............his son is also very knowledgeable about early Fender history and also sells some cool parts like replacement fiber saddles, which I've taken full advantage of. :smug: Both are friendly, genuine, & a pleasure to associate with.

Easy to spot a TB in the real world in music store parking lot , look for the nicest car and a trail of money leading to the bass area inside . This person will be rocking a Quilter v803 thru some really expensive cab(s) with a boutique bass that will hit you in the gut and put a smile on your face . This TB'er will give you a wink.........that's all that is needed . :bassist: 🤓
