Once more time: Replacement pickups for Lakland 55-01?

What size are they? Soapbars come in so many sizes, they are impossible to keep up with. I think EMG use a standard 4" by 1.5 inch frame, but I don't know for sure.

FWIW, the 55-01 pickups are 4.25" x 1.25", as near as I can measure.

The only aftermarket pickup the I can think of that will fit that size hole is the Bartolini P2.

IF you can get them, they ought to be great. I personally would look into upgrading it to the lakland american preamp before messing with the pickups. You should get more bank for the buck. I love the sound of the 55-02, but I don't know how much of that is the pre-amp, and how much is the pickups.

I agree, a preamp upgrade would probably give more bang for the buck.

I have the ASB2-5 (same pick uop in a different casing) in my Warmoth Gecko with an Aguilar OBP-1 pre-amp & they're lovely!!!!

Duncan Phase One Active Soapbars w/ the Steve Bailey 3 band preamp. I just put this system in one of my 55-01's.. Totally cool!

ASB-5 These pickups were designed in the Basslines™ Custom Shop when a series of artists had their stock pickups swapped out for something bigger, bolder and badder. Utilizing a low-noise discreet transistor preamp, the tone can be described as warm with a detailed and natural high end -- never sterile. The mids are articulate without being harsh. The Phase I's are direct Bartolini® P2 and P4 replacements.

All of our Active Soapbars use a hum canceling, split-blade magnet, so hum and string spacing problems are effectively eliminated. Available individually in Neck and Bridge models or in sets.

I was going for a more open sound than the stock MK-1's gave me. And, I was also having problems with the stock preamp (popping, crackling and noise)

Alone, the Duncans have a studio quality high fidelity sound with tighter mids. Under the covers they are a "P" bass split pickup configuration.

The low end is smooth and solid... the highs are very musical.. not brittle or harsh.

The Duncan preamp adds a lot of useful tone control. The EQ centers are exactly in the right place and their Q is excellent. The mid boost is great for solos or getting an intense Jaco sound.

The EQ is also very effective when compensating for a bad sounding room or when trying to make a rental or a gig provided "backline" rental amp sound good.

The preamp consists of all high quality components, Wima caps, etc. High end parts like James Demeter uses... It is dead quiet and for the bulk of my work, I have to have that. I do a lot of rcording.

The Duncan pickups actually do sound good with the 55-01 preamp though. I used it that way while awaiting the arrival of the Duncan preamp.

Try the pickups first and add the preamp later if you wish. If my 55-01 preamp had not had its' own problems, I would have probably left it alone.

I put my 01's MK1 pickups, passive, in a Yamaha 5 bass and they sound good in there.

I replaced my pickups with Bartolini MK-5, which are the American made versions. I feel there was quite an improvement, though I suspect the pre amp needs to be replaced as well. I like this solution since they are the same size as the MK-1s: they fit exactly in the routed area.
