A Good Pick Bass...

I play alot of pick bass because I can't play finger

my fingers lock up everytime I try and it's pretty painful.

So I'm wondering if there is any basses that sound pretty good when played with a pick? Cos you get a very different sound between pick and finger.

I was suggested an ESP, but is this a good choice? I have a budget of around £450 to let you know.

Any ideas?

Fender P bass. They sound effing fantastic with a pick IMO.

I've heard that they give a little too bright a sound, I play alot of metal, and I have considered a Fender P before. They are nice to play, just wondering if theres anything else that might offer a more metal sound?

Spector.

Half the guys in the 80's used them with a pick. But it will be brighter than a P with a pick.

1980's Matsumouko Factory P-Basses. That Dimarzio P pickup is disgustingly good and the necks are fast.

Ibanez Roadstars etc.

Tried a Jazz before, didn't sound right. Same with a PJ. I'll try the Fender P-bass first, cos they look and play pretty well.

A +1 on the Gibson Thunderbird, they sound very good with a pick. Post '88 versions used should be in your price range.
I have the same problem with my fingers just locking up, sad because I really do enjoy playing fingerstyle.

Stingrays are awsome with picks.

I also really like the sound of jazz basses with picks, I'm just kinda different like that, though.

Rickenbacker, Thunderbird, most other Gibsons (except maybe a soloed EB3 neck pickup). I don't care much for Fender + pick unless it's MacCartney on Abbey Road or John Deacon. Most active basses also work well with picks.

Yes.

It all depends on what you're looking for sonically. Perosnlly, I find a P-bass, a pick, and an SVT to be the perfect sound for most of the music my band plays.

About the stingray idea... I only have £450, and Stingrays are anything over a thousand. I don't wanna spend that much on an instrument to be honest.

As for all the ideas regarding Thunderbirds, they seem to have fairly heavy heads, does that make them harder to play?

Depends on the tone you're looking for. (OP, please guide us to your desired tone) I've used picks on all sorts of basses, although not for a long time, and all basses have unique tonal characteristics that you may or may not like.
