I stopped by Kevin Brubaker's shop yesterday after not seeing him for ages - we've played in a lot of the same bands over the years. I've never been a huge fan of modern boutique basses, but always knew he did great work. I was absolutely blown away by his new Jazz model - I played a 5 and a 6, which were incredibly easy to play for a guy who sticks with 4 strings exclusively. Amazing tone and rock-solid construction. I love the black necks and the headstock design - jazzish but with Brubaker flair. Of course now I have to have one! Here's the link:

I just love that signature contour on the lower horn cutaway. Comfort to the last fret.

Why is the neck so wide compared to the strings? You've got a lot of neck on either side.

Possibly for adjustable string spacing or a wider bridge on future models, just speculating of course.

He showed me the 7 but I didn't play it. The 5 just blew me away, but I'm going to stick to 4 for mine. His crazy woods and finishes are unbelievable. He had a purple transparent guitar there that was the prettiest guitar finish I've ever seen. My 4 needs that finish!

These are custom instruments and this particular bass was a NAMM show piece(the first JXB-5 protype) he went with a Hipshot B style bridge on. You could go wider spacing with another bridge. You can get a narrower neck if so desired too. This neck is wide but also fairly flat so even with the space outside the strings it's very easy to get around on for most people who've played it.

The figured Redwood five on the website was the first production JXB-5.

You can go with a narrower neck if so desired.
