Wasn't there a Bassplayer article on him afew years ago? Maybe it mentioned what strings he was using back then.
Guy got the axe from the John Mayer's camp a while back. It's a shame because I always really loved his playing. IMHO he's better than the current guy John uses for tours, Sean Hurley.
But I guess it could be argued that Pino is really the ultimate for Mayer. Pino's playing on Battle Studies is amazing.

Yea, well there is only one Pino, but those guy's are no slouches either. Getting Pino and Steve was a good move for John Mayer when he got into his blues thing. It added some extra credibility to his project. I don't think he would have had the same impact with some other musicians backing him up, but David Labruyere I think was a great match for John overall.
Ok, I found the article. Bassplayer April 2004 with Benny Kenny on the cover. I have the mag but no scanner so I'll just write what it says about strings.

Could be his sansamp. Could be the fact that Pino is playing at the same time too.
This is what the said in a mixonline article:

Oh i just linked that one cause it's my fav. off of that CD/DVD. You can hear his tone the best in the intro when it's just Mayer and Dela on bass. For a few seconds, the bass is all by itself and you can hear the slight OD/warmness that's really sweet. I feel i get pretty close with my transparent rig + VT bass pedal, just wondering about strings.
I remember reading an article where he said that he used some sort of tube pedal, but I can't remember which it is (not a Sansamp nor the Avalon)...anyone remember?
