Z.vex Woolly Mammoth with Active bass

No it doesn't work, or according to various people I spoke to it wouldn't work.

I had Link Removed make me a tb loop pedal with an internal impedance buffer so that I could alter the impedance from 0-50k which is good as most fuzz's like between 5-15.

It cost me 150usd including shipping to the uk and it has switchable blend and 100% wet again with a buffer so it doesn't cause any more issues.

It is probably the best pedal I've bought ever and that is saying something

This has come up over at the Zvex forums, with no conclusive answer. Perhaps you could ask there to see if anyones had any success with the dragster and the mammoth combo.

It largely depends on how the thing is wired up. The dragster's designed to alter it's input impedance to load the pickups down, but the issue here is the impedance seen by the mammoth when looking out of the input (ie; the output impedance of the dragster.) How that reacts I have no idea.

So... given my lack of solid knowledge about this type of thing, how does this "no active basses" thing limit what one can put infront of it? For example, I would imagine that my boss equalizer first would basically be the same as running an active bass into it, but what about a pog, or other effects?

And as I'm looking into the used market, is the battery life really all they claim it to be? I dont actually expect for ever, but is it really that much less changing than a "normal" pedal? (sorry, only semi on topic, but didn't want to start a new thread just for this)

Thanks

The mammoth and almost any of the Zvex pedals needs to be first in the chain.
The way they are designed requires that.
The boss EQ pedal, like any other pedal, is still adding power behind the signal just as an active would (correct me if i'm wrong..i could be, but thats how i see it)
I use my mammoth on a looper

and as for the battery life.
If you unplug the pedal everytime you aren't playing, it'll last a long time
I had my original battery for one year and i usually left it plugged in over night because i'm forgetfull like that. but now i use the powerplate which adds more sonic ability and I can be lazy

Sounds pretty good with my bass

I keep my EQ flat on board

That's pretty much what I'd expected, although I'd definately hoped that a less preampish pedal would have less problems. Kind of sad though, the mammoth is pretty much exactly what I think when I think bass fuzz, but it'd be nice to be able to play with the octave first. I guess its off to look for other fuzz sound samples.

Curious though, what does the looper do for you? What advantages are there beyond just turning the pedal off (as I thought it was true bypass)?

I know thats a silly question, but I'm behind on sleep and not thinking as well as I should be.

Well the octave and the mammoth sounds incredible together.
I use the looper to turn multiple pedals on and off at the exact same time. and it's nice to not hit a pedal and worry about hitting the dials and messing up your settings.
and the looper is completely truebypass
My loops go like this
Input: Morely AB switch-->Radial BigShot
Loop 1: Mammoth-->Ashdown Suboctave-->DOD Flanger
Loop 2: Bassdrive-->Boss EQ
Output: Morley Duel Bass Wah

So I can go from fuzz-octave-bassdrive to clean in one "foot hit" onthe looper (less of a foot workout)

I haven't tried going octave-->mammoth but i'll see, i don't expect much from it

But mammoth-->octave-->bassdrive has this ultra think lowend that'll cut through any mix.Takes some of that "industrial" sound that most people don't enjoy about it, but still has the mammoth voicings. I'l try and get some sounds up

Awesome, thanks for all the info. Sound soamples would be absolutely glorious, but if you'd even be willing to tell me how octave first sounds I'd be greatly appreciative. I've always had the best luck with octave into fuzz/od ( ithink... haven't had my octaver in a while). Is the tracking still decent with the mammoth first, or is the fuzz so intense that one doesn't even notice?

Ok well i recorded some
I just recorded everything into a Radial JDI
no amp, just Pedulla then pedals
EQ onboard is flat
First you'll hear a simple riff with everything clean
Then I turn the mammoth on
Then the octave
Then the bassdrive

volumes aren't exactly equal..but u get the point

pedulla.wav - 2.57MB
uh... it sounds SO far from the sample on the Z.Vex web site...
is the octaver before the mammoth in the chain?
and the bassdrive?

yeah, on the first loop it goes mammoth then octave
then on the other loop it has the bassdrive

and i am using an active bass..so it's not going to sound exactly like that, and their nobs are a little different then mine
