Mills Acoustics added a 6x10 bass cab to their line of guitar cabs which looks pretty cool. Seems like they make high quality stuff. Anyone have experience with any of their products?

I emailed them to get more details on the cab... I'll post when I get a reply.

I just got a response from some questions I emailed him.. sounds pretty cool..

Is it a sealed design?
***yes
Is the inside divided into compartments ala SVT?
***no. It contains a larger version of our Afterburner baffle as used on our guitar cabs. This produces extremely focused tone based on the signal from the amp. It is tight and punchy and delivers solid lows without the flabbiness of most cabs.
What is the frequency response?
*** the cab will deliver freqs in the mid-upper 40hz range however we don't have updated efficiency info at that range....we're working on it...
Does it have a tweeter - if so, can I get one without?
***no tweeter.
What is the impedance?
***4 or 8 ohm
How is it wired - series, parallel?
***depends on the desired impedance.
What kind of speaker jacks are on the back?
***1/4"mono IN and 1/4" mono EXT OUT

Our 610B is designed to be the all-around most versatile single cab on the market and it delivers like no other 10" based cab in existence. Like our guitar cabs, it allows the Celestions to fully deliver what they were designed for without interference or "coloring" from a poorly designed/constructed enclosure. The cab is rated at 600W standard...900W available for $120 additional charge.

They dont list any specs. I'd also be wary of a companies first bass cab, alll their other stuff is celestion equipped git cabs. Not really the same thing as bass cab. Different ideas on tone. (guitarists want break up and a little mud, bassists generally want clarity and definition). I like the look, a little boogie-ish.

I would think that's the sort of thing one should do during the R&D stages prior to introducing the product, not after.

If they haven't even measured it how do they know?

I didn't see a weight listed for the 6x10. Also, it seems to have four casters at the bottom... with a cabinet that size, I'd prefer the ability to tilt back and push like a hand cart.

The tolex options are cool, though (said the guy with the red NV610 :D ).
 
I asked about caster and some other things... here is the reply. Seems like a good guy and I am still curious about the cab. They do have a return policy though you have to eat shipping...

1. We certainly offer Neutriks as a free option, but just don't get many requests for them. Most of the guys are "old school" and tend to want 1/4" jacks.

2. In our early prototyping, we tried the recessed casters but didn't like the way they interferred with our back panel. We tried variations but just never liked the result. I know others put convenience over durability...we don't. Every technique and component on our cabs is based on 2 criteria...TONE and Durability, in that order. What we have gotten back from our touring musicians (which WE knew) is the realization that 99% of the time, cabs are on hard, flat surfaces. Our four caster arrangement allows the cab to be manuevered with minimal effort. If you run into stairs or need to lift it for loading, it takes two men to do so regardless of the wheels. Therefore, durability dictates, the way we see it.

3. I can certainly build a cab with the features you describe, but a big part of the reason we enjoy the unparralled reputation for quality that we have is because my customers tend to trust my judgement that ALL aspects of cab design have been taken into consideration on any product which carries my name. Every nut, bolt, baffle and technique is there because I know it to be an essential ingredient of the overall quality I require in design and construction.

I hope this sheds some light on my philosophy somewhat. I look forward to getting you running the best bass cab on the Planet.

Give me a break. Taking a frequency response plot can be done with free software, a fifty dollar mic and a thirty dollar SPL meter. The response can be predicted prior to building the box, again using free software, with no hardware investment whatsoever. There is only one conceivable reason why someone would not use a box program prior to building a cabinet to predict the result, and then measure it after building it to be sure that it worked as intended: they don't know how. I'm not saying that this cabinet was designed by someone with no audio design knowledge whatsover, with its design parameters arrived at purely by chance, but it wouldn't be the first time it happened. I have no problems with someone making rosy claims for how their products work. But they have to back up those claims with facts. There are none to be found here.

They're not working on it very hard. Even with the most elementary measuring equipment a full SPL test takes no more than a half hour to perform. Using measuring software it takes a few seconds. In the same amount of time a box program will tell you that a driver with an fs of 75 Hz in a sealed cabinet cannot deliver usable response to 40Hz. Caveat Emptor.
 
hi guys

funny to see this thread resurected again. i ended up buying a mesa powerhouse 6x10. while the mills cabs are kind of appealing, their responses didn't give me a warm and fuzzy that they totally know what they are doing.

We all know that (even tho thy're not listed on the Celestion website) that T/S parameters can change based on the enclosure the speaker is in. If we have a 100 watt speaker specifically made to operate within a vented enclosure of no less than a certain volume, with the vents being of a specific size and depth..... and you throw them in a small sealed enclosure..... not only does the power rating change, but several other parameters as well.... ( back me up on this Bill?)

Anyway..... lots of new companies popping up.... the two most notable ones IMHO, Schroeder and Bergantino were started by a seasoned bassist with carpenty knowledge and a seasoned audio engineer with a history of designing boutique gear...... Mills doesnt seem to have either......

I would definetly try one of these out if I could get Mills to eat the return shipping if I didnt like it......

The cabinet doesn't alter the T/S parameters. It does determine how the driver will work, so that half of your statement is correct.

Once upon a time the only way you could actually know what a driver would do was to put it in a box and try it. The technical term for this technique is empirical design, and until the early 1970's that's how all speakers were designed. While mathematical formulas for cabinets date back to the early 1900s there was no way to be sure exactly what would happen when you put driver A into cabinet B without actually doing so. T/S parameters allow a very precise prediction of how a driver and cabinet will work together.
