DigiTech Whammy Mods?

Is there anyway to modify the new DigiTech Whammies to include the 5th up/octave up harmony? There are definitely a few harmony settings on this pedal that I don't see much use for, but the 5th up/octave up seems very useful.

Please don't respond with "just get a bass whammy" or anything like that because I'm not spending that kind of money.

Thanks!

i own it and am very happy with it... and u can get it on ebay for cheaper then a wh-4, i got my xp-100 for $142, that was WITH shipping

if u find anything called an xp-1000, by a seller named "jetpack" or something, he mods these things, to include every single setting from every pedal in the XP series... hes crazy heh, the only problem with them is u have to unplug the power supply before u switch over to the next model so the settings can load into the ram

At one point, someone was selling modded XP series pedals that included all of the effects from the XP-100, 200, 300, and 400. I'm assuming they installed additional EPROMs cloned from the other units, since there was a switch to change the effect type, but you had to power cycle it to get the new bank to load.

But, since all this did was duplicate the existing effects, this doesn't really help you. What you really want is an Akai Unibass (which is not exactly cheap at this point either).

Beyondhairy, I know that you sold your Bass Whammy and bought the XP-100. Is there any difference in tracking and sound quality between the two units? It sounds like a great buy, but then I wonder why Bass Whammies are all the rage, but I never hear much about the XP-100.

I have both pedals (XP100 and Bass Whammy) and the Bass Whammy track better the low notes. For example with my XP100 I could do a low E "slide" (hitting the low in the 1 octave Up) sound fairly good, but if I drop the low E to low D, it sounds like crap. With the Bass Whammy the low D sounds really good.
By the way, it also tracks fairlly good a low B.

Final note: I've brought first the XP100 with the expectation that I could reply the sounds of the Bass Whammy (I'm a major fan of Tool) but soon I noticed a some issues in the tracking of the low notes (Maybe I had bad luck with my XP100). So I thought that some day I would buy a Whammy 4 for the 1 Octave Up (I've heard that tracks good the low notes, true?) and keep the XP100 for the 5th/Oct up harmony and some other settings. But one month ago I brought a Bass whammy in eBay with an awesome price (cheaper than what I pay for the XP100!!!!!) and I very pleased with this pedal.

u got a bass whammy for cheaper then an xp-100?!! WOW, iv never seen one go for that cheap.. how much did u get them for?

and yea.. i original had a wh-4, but i needed the 5th/oct cuz i too and a HUGE tool nut,

my bass whammy was kinda iffy, i mena, it sounded great and really maintained the low end nicely, but if i didnt sent a strong enough signal into it, the signal would get all wavey and glitchy. i think thats because it was broken at some point and then fixed, youd have to ask freaky fender how it was fixed thoug cuz i got it from him

I'm pretty sure, that at least in theory, one could modify a Whammy IV to have 5th up/oct up. I've never looked inside a Whammy, but I'll bet that there's one central chip that controls the various settings, and has them stored in its memory. So in theory, if one could get at the data on that, and figure out how it all works, then you could probably change the data and reflash it onto the chip with your new settings.

It'd probably be a somewhat time consuming process, but if someone with some gnarly computer skills tried, I do believe it could be done.

Of course I could be COMPLETELY wrong. But chances are that the various Whammys (Whammies?) aren't vastly different from each other, because companies are lazy, and prefer to just do minor updates and sell it as something wholly different. Someone should post up some pictures of the insides! Perhaps that might inspire someone to try modding it.

I really hope this is possible, because that would ROCK.

say that i got a Whammy. if it could be modded, could i take off the stuff like '2 Octaves Up' and 'Dive Bomb' that is not useful to us as bassists and put on some modes that we as bassists want? if i did that, would it be worth it?
