Prepare yourself, this is a long, sad and sordid tale. I have been on a long, long search for the perfect bass amp. I wanted something with a very warm, deep, organic sound, capable of a smooth, fluid overdrive; suited for playing small venues. In other words I didnt want a massive bass monolith, stacked to the ceiling and disintegrating everyone in the bar when its set at one-and-half.
On that note; I tried everything I could find that might fit the bill. Nothing seemed to be quite what I was looking for. Enter the Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout. I walked into the local GC and there it was, and for five minutes, I thought that I had found my amp until it began to make a mysterious farting sound- similar to that of a blown speaker.
I talked to my salesperson and he said that they had received several other Scouts, all with the same problem. He also went on about how Mesa had a very sketchy track record as far as reliability was concerned. I had heard about these reliability issues in the past. However, I had always figured that most of the trash talking came from the mouths of Mesa bashers. Now, I was beginning to wonder, and beginning to sweat. I hadnt found anything else within range that sounded anywhere near as good as the Scout.
So, I went to another local Mesa dealer, same problem. Two other dealers, same problem. Four of the five Scouts that Ive tried all had the same problem, I also stumbled across a used head, guess what, it didnt work.
So heres the question. What is going on with Mesa? I thought that they prided themselves on quality, or is that a thing of the past? For the prices that they charge, you should have an amp that will outlive all of us, and they let this slip through the cracks and dont really seem to care or seem to be addressing the problem wow.
Needless to say, Im back on the trail, searching for that holy-grail sound
Any recommendations?
Cheers,
TC

), but the percentage of faulty amps that come back to them remains at the same level it has always been: very, very low.
