Here's mine:

I currently have a '77 RD Standard and a Greco T-Bird. I've also owned an SG bass and an Explorer bass. I love Gibson basses. That's a beautiful family portrait, drbassman!

I love the way the old Gibson Basses feel. Nut width, the shape of the neck... just perfect. I have a hard time reconciling the comfort and the look with the sound, though. Gibson basses do what Gibson basses do- and that's not the "Fender" sound.

My first real bass was a 71 EB-0. It's still so easy to play- It's been beaten up, hacked up and it probably sounds "better" now than it ever has. I got it around 1984/5 when I was like 15. The first thing I did with it was to route it out for a P pickup with a sharpened screwdriver. More than a half dozen pickups have gone into that rout, and it's been expanded to the size of an Olympic swimming pool- but it actually sounds decent now.




At least 5 headstock breaks that I'm aware of...




My 1979 Thunderbird was my main bass for around 5 years. I loved the look. I loved the neck. I hated the woofy, low middy sound that never got "crisp." Last year I took a gig in a Rolling Stones "tribute" band, and my Jazz was way too bright and crisp- So I dug the T-Bird out of retirement (I was contemplating selling it!) and it's been a perfect fit for the band. With the band, I've been using a mute- a piece of neoprene mousepad foam resting on the bridge, and this bass sounds great for doing the Stones.

The only other Gibson bass I've owned was a 1968 EB-2. Again, it was a fun bass to play- it looked supremely cool and classy, but it sounded like poop warmed over. It's long gone, but I hope whoever has it is enjoying it.

Wow, you have some nice basses there. Your retirement is secure! I too, like Gibson basses and have a few.

I no longer own any Gibsons, but back in the 1970's I had an EB-0 and a Ripper L9-S. As the OP pointed out, they were definitely unique and quirky!

Guys, those EB2's are beautiful.

I played a vintage one a long time ago, and it was love at first sight. Fat, thunderous, fat, did I mention fat? I've yearned for one ever since, and if I find an affordable one, I'll snatch it up.

What I can never understand is why players complain that Gibsons can't sound like a Fender – that goes both ways, none of my Fenders can get that insanely tubby tone like an EB2!

If I want a Fender tone, I'll use one of my Fenders! I don't see it as a "which one?" proposition, but as a "give me both!" proposition.

Sadly, I don't own any Gibbys, but would love to have one. Wish list:

1. EB2 – see above! By far, my #1 Gibson lust.
2. Thunderbirds are arguably the most "rock" looking bass ever, and I'd love to have one. That said, the Epiphone one I borrowed from a friend was utter crap. I'd hope the Gibsons are better.
3. RD series. Never played one, but I like the looks!
4. Victory Bass – I know, kind of Fendery for a Gibson, but I liked the one I tried!
5. If the original Gibson is anything like the Epiphone Jack Cassady, I want it!

That's probably pretty much it – I'm not really big on short scale instruments, which weeds out a lot of the rest of the Gibsons.

I am down to only a Gibson SG Reissue, but I love it.

I really wish I didn't sell my 70's G3 and Grabber in the early 90's though!

I also have a Les Paul Studio and SG Classic. Both 6 stringers though so shouldn't count.

I have a 2001 ebony T-Bird and just bought 2 Epi non-reverse Birds (4 & 5 string). I'll have to post pics another time.

I still have my Black 76 TBird. Haven't played it in a while,thought I'd give it a rest. So maybe I'll just go down to the store and by it a fresh set Roto's and string it up.

That picture of the whole fam damily at the start of the thread brought back a flood of memories. I once had (back in ancient times) a Les Paul Recording Bass with the low impedence pick ups. That's a nice collection.

Dimarzio Model 1. I have the original pickup, finger rest, bridge cover and mute too.
People always talk smack about the EB-0's muddy sound. I love it. It sits at the bottom of the mix like a 50 lb. catfish.

I've got a 99 Gibson USA thunderbird that i boaught at my local music shop for 11 hundred. it took me three months of layaway but its worth every penny. i love my gibson
