Colin Cameron (who died in 2015) is one of those session bassists I grew up hearing without knowing his name. His name has turned up here before because of his connection to The Muppet Show.
One of the records in heavy rotation on my little portable record player was the (Paul Williams) soundtrack to the movie Bugsy Malone. It came out when I was 7.
A distinct memory I have from that time is of occasionally playing my records on 45 or 78 RPM instead of 33⅓ which was mostly for comic effect, but had the side effect of pushing the basslines up in pitch to where the tiny, tinny speaker reproduced them better and they could be perceived as melodies.
The whole soundtrack album is still pretty good, even if the production style is a touch dated.
