Just ordered a thunderfunk 550b. I'm keeping my EDEN WT550 and the aguilars for my rig #1 (that stays at church) and will initially put the TF with my newly aquired used Bergantino HT112 and EX112.

Eventually the favorite speakers and amp will end up at church...:) :smug:

Congrats on the new rig - that is what I run as well. Sounds good by itself and sounds KILLER in a band setting. Deep, warm, punchy with sweet mids and clear highs. Surprisingly loud, too considering the overall size of the rig. Folks are always skeptical when I show up with it, but when they hear it cranked up... :bassist:

Just have the TFunk delivered to church. That's where it will eventually be!:smug:

whats interesting is I've been playing with the aggies for about 3 years and they sound best when I'm standing right near them!? but, in my new church gig I'm standing about 10-15 feet away and I have a hard time dialing in a nice round sound with good "pluck" (finger style) but usually ends up being too "honky"? then I boost the bass or lows and then its too dark?

I'm very curious to see how the bergs and TF respond.

This may take several weeks or months, but at church I will (I play every other week):

#1 try the TF with the aggies.
#2 Try the TF with the Bergs.
#3 try the EDEN with the Bergs.

don't know if I'll mix-n-match.

At home:

#1 EDEN with bergs.
#2 TF with Bergs.
Eden already sounded good at home with one aggie. (the one I sold to get the first berg!)

Well, I wouldn't say the TFunk\Berg is anything near that "honk" you describe - the Bergs are the sweetest sounding cabs I've ever heard (at any distance). Also, as I'm sure you've heard, the TFunk sounds great flat - most amps I've used require you to dial them in before they sound good and that is minimal here.

I go back and forth between a TF TFB550B and an Ashdown ABM500 EVOII RC -> an NV215. The tone I dial is is very similar, but the TF is quicker and punchier, while the ABM is a little fatter and woolier. Both are versatile. The TF is better for dealing with problem rooms. The ABM does a better SVT imitation. Plus there's the reliability thing - the AMB never leaves the house without a backup, unlike the TF. All IMO.

I played the Eden WT400 at church this morning. It's been a couple of months since I sold my WT550 but I was very surprised at how much more EQ'ing I had to do compared to my TFunk. Are the WT400 and WT550 pre's voiced different or have I just gotten spoiled with the ease of the Tfunk Timbre and enhance controls?
I had a real tough time getting the sound I wanted out of my fretless.
I predicting that after you play the new TFunk out a few times, the Eden will stay at home. Not a slam to the Eden. It's a great amp but IMO just not near as plug and play as the TFunk.

oh man, don't tell me this! now my GAS for a thunderfunk is higher and i wanna go order one right now :eek:

I love my ashdown but get bored and feel like moving on.

I think if my ashdown ever failed on me then i would move onto a thunderfunk or if i came across a thunderfunk 2nd which won't happen where i live :(

This is Dave Funks reply to this question in another TB Thread:



My test load only goes to 2.66 ohms, so I haven't done any 2 ohm testing. If you run 2 ohms and it doesn't blow up, then you're good to go. It should theoretically work, but you WILL strain the transformer and the output transistors if you drive it too hard, which is the whole point. You won't get more power out of it as the max power computations are all based on supply voltage and load, and is why it's a 4-ohm amp. I have another post about 2-ohm loads somewhere. You need to understand that a 4-ohm amp isn't designed to work at 2-ohms OR 8-ohms. 8-ohms doesn't strain it, because it puts out less power. 2-ohms WILL cause strain, but how much? Depends. I wouldn't do it. Many amps don't do 2-ohms. And bridged, many only do 8-ohms. Maybe you need different speakers?

My testing would be very abusive. Your playing probably isn't. I've tested the amp to the point of the aluminum chassis hitting 200 degrees F, and the emitter resistors unsoldering themselves. It didn't blow after 12 hours in this steady state. That's 100% continuous full-power. Your playing is probably 20% of that. You hit a note and the PEAK is 550-watts, but it fades immediately, averaging (I estimate) 20%.
