old thread, wondering if anyone has tried this - replacing the power tubes in a V-4B with 6550's. The obvious goal here is to make my V-4B sound more like my SVT-Cl (but easier to carry, no fan noise, etc). I am sure they won't sound exactly the same due to other differences, and that Ampeg had reasons for using the 6L6GC's. but just wondering if it is worth a shot.
Reading about these mods, I have 2013, looks like I'm stuck with 6L6's.
Not a cheap up grade, the tubes cost are nuts, upgrading the transformer and the amp tech time....
@Wasnex does this help
looking for it online...
The 7581A sounds a bit like a 6550, noticeably more solid than a 6L6. Must have that.Tung Sol 7027A or Tung Sol 7581A may work, as they are 6L6 variants.
yeah just figuring this out, going to have to wait to Monday to get it.
