how do you learn to growl/scream??

Hello dear followers of the low end!

Me and a couple of friends ar going to start a band, and I will probably sing backup vocals.
So I thougt that I would learn to growl..... but how?

So I was wondering if there are any TB'ers that know how to growl/scream?

Any help will be appreciated :help:

umm....you just do it. i dunno it's not something i generally think about, it's sorta like asking how do you breathe.

You should really learn a correct technique. Otherwise you will very likely damage your throat/vocal chord/whatever after sometime. M Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold comes to mind. He had to undergo surgery, and can only sing normal now i think.

They say that he sings melodically because they wanted to change their style, but it probably is because of the surgery.

Anyways, only advice I can give is to just practice and try to scream from the gut (screaming from the throat is what will screw you up). It's kind of hard to explain it, but essentially you want to try to sing with the air you push from deep down...yeah I'm horrible at explaining this. Just keep practicing and if it starts to hurt, then try some other technique. Getting a good scream out isn't hard, getting a good scream without hurting yourself is what's tricky.

Ah yes, screaming from the gut is proper technique. You can probably google some info on this.

Diafram Growls are what your going to want to do, be warned that ANY growl technique will damage your chords, but growling from your diafram will leasen the damage by ALOT. I figured out how too by singing and making sure i was doing it from my diafram and then just making the growl sound of pushing alot of air as low as i could. I then asked my guitar teacher/bass instructor/ conection to many a gig/vocal guru if I was doing it right. You can also get a few leasons from a profesional on how to do it correctly.

He had a MINOR surgery and that was NOT the cause of his change in vocal style.

I heard the surgery was so big that they found an entire species of cave trolls living in his voice box. It took an entire team of Fighters and 3 Wizards to get them out.

If you actually read my post i did only say that he cant growl/scream anymore, not that it was why he changed! CAPSCAPCAPS.

u should search for 'growling' in wikipedia, it claims that growling eventually wears out your voice no matter what technique you use

Take lots of drugs and drink denatured alcohol....? :hmm:

Then you don't have to worry about the permanent damage you have done to your voice, as you will be dead long before it really kicks in...

Get ahold of a pit bull and a mountain lion, chain them up so their just out of reach of one another and take lessons from the commotion that follows. The dog will teach snarling and growling and barking. The lion will teach the hissing and screaming and looking pissed.
Nature has the answer to all of life's questions.
If that fails, there is probably a Simpsons episode to deal with it.

What type of growl are you going for?

Technique goes a long way. I am sure the singers from Slipknot and Lamb of God know something good about how to perserve their voices.

Pushing from your stomach is the most important part. For some reason I can't get my singer to understand it. In my band, the link is below, I do the low growling. If that helps great, if not sorry. I can't type it out and make it understandable, but in person I could show you. Practice practice practice. If you know any Cannibal Corpse "sing" along with the song(s). How I learned; of course my vocal chords are pretty much shot but I was able to teach myself.

Well im going for something like mixture Alexi Laiho (Children of bodom) and Marco Tapani Hietala (Nightwish)

I have tried to scream from the gut but it wont come yet...I gues that I need more practicing :hmm:
