how do you learn to growl/scream??

check out the "zen of screaming" website by melissa cross. She coaches everyone in the biz right now. Go to www.melissacross.com and there are some intro lessons you can check out, but if you really want the full lessons, you should order the dvd. It's pretty cool stuff. And def. remember, if it hurts, you're not doing it right. Be careful, because you can do serious damage if you are screaming incorrectly.

If you smoke, quit. I used to 'sing' backup in my first band. I smoked then but flash forward a few years to now, and a few thousand squares later, no more growling or screaming. I get all choked up and scratchy if I try and do it. Yeah I have a low voice that's kind of gravelly at times, but if I try and force air out at 'singing' levels I can't do it.

Whatever you do, record yourself doing it and make sure that you are getting the desired effect. For a while, I was trying to let some 'rock and roll growl' creep in to my vocal style for rock songs. I know that I don't like my own voice, and I thought this would help me to sound less like my natural speaking voice. I recorded myself doing some of this gravely, growling rock singing. It sounded awful. It actually sounded like me trying to hold a conversation while taking a dump. Not at all the sound I was going for. I'll say it again - Record yourself and make sure that you like the sound of what you are doing. If you ever need a front man that sounds like he's taking a dump, give me a call. ;)

be sure to keep your throat open
anchor the sound, imagine it going in and down instead of up and out, pure psychology

following those two tips, i amaze my friends and family by going from the speaking voice of a pre-pubescent girl to an Alexi Laiho or a Troy Sanders

Thank you very much!
That DVD has been a great help:hyper: :bassist:

while it is true that any/all screaming will do *some* damage, proper technique can limit it to being insignificant. Melissa has some amazing stuff in her dvd, and while it's the weirdest exercises to do, it works: I am able to do metal vocals with little to no strain on my chords at all. I am able to speak completely normally, with no fatigue after a good yelling session. :hyper:
