I am constantly amazed by some of the personal information that some people are willing to post on the Internet, as if no one but they and their closest friends are ever likely to see it. In addition to things like MySpace and BBSes like OT, there are sites where people set up Web cams and engage in publicly-viewable "video chat." And, most of the people on these sites are not adults; they are kids (or at least they claim to be) between 14 and 19.

When did we get to the point that people believe their lives are:

1) So interesting that the world gives a crap about them

2) Fodder for public viewing and comment by strangers

Forget the whole child endangerment angle -- That's a separate discussion. What I want to know is, when did our society become populated by a bunch of brain-dead narcissists who don't seem to understand that what they put on the Web is out there for everyone to see?

Or, as they just exhibitionists? Is it possible that so many people have been exhibitionists all along, but - before the 'Net - they didn't have a means of "exposing" themselves?

Do you post personal information online? Do you care who reads or sees it? Are you an exhibitionist?

LOL. Only if I'm horny. But they ain't fooling me. But usually I think they look like googily eyes and have conversations with myself. Did you know I'm a ventriliquist out my a$$. I didn't either. ;)

It's like our obsession with reality TV. Only it's the internet.

I let it all hang out, but hide what I have to hide. I try not to name names and I try not to post anything that would be hurtful to another.

That being said, I blog about everything. Mostly for entertainment value. I like to think of myself as an entertainer rather than an exhibitionist.

I agree with your sentiments 100% - so I'm happy to chat about general stuff with other people - like I would in the office - sports,state of the world, philosophy etc.

And of course my big interest - music /bass playing which is what I came here for, as nobody in any office I frequent, talks about this! :p

But really personal stuff - no! In the last year or so - there have been some major personal events in my life - but I would never think about plastering it all over TB or any web site! :hmm:

One could argue that merely by posting anything on the web - even in a forum like TB - you are implicity assuming that people give a damn about what you think. I am not sure that there is much distinction to be made between being an "intellectual" exhibitionist, which pretty much everyone on a message board is, and a "visual" exhibitionist on things like myspace etc.

I think you got it all wrong. This has nothing to do with exhibitionism. Its just that the newer generations understand that it doesnt change anything if people know who you are online.

So what if you have personal info? You think people are gonna bother to look you up? Nobody cares.
