Gig review: Genz Benz Neopak 3.5 head and Neox212t cab

Well, I posted a gig review of my Neopak and the Neox112t cab recently (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=337931). Tonight I finally got to play a louder gig, and used the Neox212t cab. This was a gig for a country rock artist named Beau Brasswell. I was subbing for the regular bassist who had another gig. This is a loud band, with a lot of stage volume and a killer drummer. I was initially really worried about the Neopak and 212 being able to carry things, but the worries were unfounded. The rig performed flawlessly, with plenty of volume, and the sound was rich and full in all ranges. I was playing a MIA Fender Jazz 5 string active, and the combination was just great. I had a bit of grit dialed in with the tube preamp section, and played with the pickups blended but shaded a bit more to the neck pickup, and played with my right hand over the bridge pickup except for the few ballads in the sets. I just can't get over how well this setup worked, and how loud the Neopak's 350 watts are into the Neox212t. I didn't expect the volume I was getting. I can't see myself actually needing more volume and headroom than this for 90% of my playing.

Hope to play for Beau again sometime ... he rocks!! And so does my rig!

I downsized from a Genz-Benz 410 XB to a NeoX 212T. At first I too was concerned about volume but that went away fast. I absolutely love my NeoX 212T! I don't use the tweeter as I'm old school and the tone is rich, lush, warm, full with lots and lots of depth. IMHO Genz-Benz is a highly underated company that produces exceptional bass gear. I see another NeoX 212T in my future as a pair of them will cover any future needs I can imagine for me.

Congrats, that is a nice rig. You know, isn't it amazing what alot of these manufacturers are building today!!! I mean really, it is amazing how much sound they are getting out of such tiny and lightweight rigs! For those of us without roadies, back problems, living in places like NYC, or just plain too lazy to have big heavy gear, what a blessing the neo cabs and new lightweight amps are.
God, I think back to the days of my first cab (a Peavey with 1-18 and 2-10) that was essentially like moving a freezer or small refrigerator!! Good thing I was young and my neck worked back then!!!

Played a gig recently where the entire band had PA support except me. We felt that the bass would carry well enough without the PA.

It did an awesome job! I was able to jump off stage for a guest player, and it just sounded perfect! Fit perfectly in the mix and was able to hear everything that he was doing clearly...

Officially GAS free in amps! :hyper:

I am wondering if I bought the wrong head. I have a GBE600 and a Neox212. It sounds great. The head is heavey, but I kinda like having the FET/Tube option. I can also adjust my signal shape, not just select one, although that's probably not a ig deal. I'd sure like a lighter head.

Since you have a SS preference, I would say no. The Neo-pak has a nice warm sound to it, with the characteristic low-end bloom that you seem not to prefer. I even think it sounds warmer than the tube side of my 1200. One way for to find out though is to try a gig on the tube side of your gbe 600 and see how you like it.

As for the global shaping options, I hardly use them on either head, but I find that the predetermined settings on the Neo-pak are spot-on for live use.

Hey Steve,
You know, one option too if you end up prefering solid state would be to grab a Markbass Little Mark II ... that would crank 500 solid state watts into the Neox212t for ya ... ;)
