Building an Equalizer (Frequencies and Circuits)

Well if you haven't read my thread on the "perfect" distortion, I want to get a fuzz that has an EQ before and after it, and I want to build it! So what I need from you guys (y'all if you will) is what kind of EQ I should go with, graphic or parametric (I'm leaning towards parametric, though it will be quite a bit harder to make.) If I go with graphic, then I want to know what frequencies you guys think would be best. I would go with 4-5 frequencies if I did graphic.

Also, if anyone can help me figure out how equalizer circuits work, please chime in. Web sites are helpful too.

Well, the usual DIY sites have plenty of EQ schematics and discussion. Diystompboxes is a favorite. An EQ is a type of filter, and each band is its own filter circuit. A simple filter can be created using only one capacitor and one resistor; in fact, IIRC that's the basis of each band of the MXR graphic EQ I happened to open up a while back.

Well I definitely don't understand everything yet, but that web page looks promising, I just need to sit down and actually read it. No sifting through and getting the jist of it here... real understanding here I come!

haha

The 6-band EQ circuit and PCB can be found on DIYstompboxes forum, if I recall correctly. I'd recommend a graphic EQ, really. I kind of like 'seeing' my EQ that way.

being able to see your EQ is nice, but parametric is much more adjustable, you can get exactly what you want instead of approximately what you want

besides this way I can have like 80 knobs :D :D

And then you can have like 0 ways to fit it on your board :D

Oh I have plenty of room!

Actually I do have a bit of spare space, expecially since this is replacing the space my muff took up.

I almost get how the parametric works, I think I will order some parts in a day or two... gotta get an encolsure, but I have to make sure its big enough... If I do a parametric with 4 bands, on both sides... thats already 24 knobs  hmm, maybe I'll make a bass knob, a treble knob and two parametric mid knobs... thats down to 16 knobs plus 3 for the muff, plus a couple of volume knobs

this will be fun :D

maybe I wont include Q knobs
