Good Metal/Good Low sound amp

Lookin to upgrade both bass and amp for Xmas and Im not too experienced with bass amps. I am going to get a 5 string so factor in the good low sound. Right now i have a 90W Behringer that has lasted me about 2 years pretty well. Not the best low sound tho. Im trying to find something for good low supporting metal lines, as well as clarity in mids for riffing. Think Trivium/Sancity/Metallica kind of stuff. There is a sample on my bands myspace without the bass since i joined fairly recently. myspace.com/ourlastbreath2007. the first is an original and the second is master of puppets cover with the guitarist dubbing in bass. thanks---Ender

Are you playing out? Fingerstyle or pick? Budget?

My bad left that out. Fingerstyle mostly, might pick a little live but not a whole lot. Budget is around $500-600, give or take

Well if I'm understanding you correctly that you are trying to get a new bass AND combo amp for $600 I dont know if Im going to be much help to you with recommendations. :hmm:

While any bass and combo amp will make sound... a 5 string bass really requires MUCH MUCH MORE from both the amplifier AND the Speaker(s) you're using with it in order to sound good...

My favorite recommendation for an inexpensive, powerful metal rig goes as follows:

Warwick Rockbass Corvette: $300 used on ebay
Sansamp BDDI: $100 used on ebay
Behringer Europower Power amp: $255 everywhere
Avatar B212 NEO: $300 direct

$ 955.00

Thats under $1000 for a KILLER rig with tons of sounds and plenty loud.

Maybe get all the amp stuff for Xmas and save up for the Warwick?

Im gonna say that at least 50% of all metal / rock / hardcore albums you can buy have the bass tracks recorded with Sansamp Bass drivers or plugins. That IS the sound you hear.

Let us know what you decide!

+1...on used & +2 on a GK!!! Tho they aren't MY faves, they do a great solid sound-always like Duff's sound on VR live stuff I've heard!- are reliable(as long as U don't get the 'backline' range AFAIK) Otherwise IMHO U R lookin at spending more $$ & go for a SVT 2 or 2 PRO. I dunno how much they're goin for 2nd hand in US tho! Probly more than budget. So GK= great heavy bass tone!

Nah nah man the $500-600 is strictly for the amp. Im buying that and getting the bass as an Xmas gift.

Well, that being the case, you can even get the Avatar 410.

Then you'll have a 1000 watt amp with the best sounding preamp available for metal bass under $500 IMO....

check the soundsamples out if you havent already:

I agree: Separate Amp & Cab. I just saw a Peavey 215 cab on eBay for $65, and Peavey 215 cabs are great. Point being-you can find used cabs fairly cheap. As the others said-GK amps-they have some nice features that other amps don't have (like boost, overdrive).

for metal sounds you might like mxrs m80 pedal for a little less than the sansamp... dont know if anyone will agree with me but i have the mxr pedal and i loooove the distortion tones i can get from it... it nails the pantera sound the manson sound and with a 5 string you can do the killswitch tone to a T ... its incredibly versatile and you will probably never play without the preamps color switched on it sounds killer on the dirty channel you can even roll the gain way back along with the blend and still have all the volume of the clean channel and get just a hint of fuzz like the gk flea kinda sound

It says your myspace account was deleted.

If you can find a used carvin b1500, try it out.
I've seen them go for 4-500. You have more power than you could ever need and they snarl!

I'm using one with 2 Avatar 4x10s and it just crushes. My tone is very much the Rex Brown / Mike starr heavy low mid and gain tone. I've never had trouble with a great tone and pleanty of volume.
