Double Bass Gold Tone?

Someone said that this local company, Gold Tone, makes a Baby Bass. I looked it up on the net, and it's called a club bass. Anyone heard of it? Is there a chance it has that baby bass sound? I was always under the impression Azola or Ray Ramirez were the only ones that make decent copies.

There are a number of people making successful Baby Bass copies in Colombia, too. Sendel is one of the better-known brands.

As far as the Gold Tone, it uses a piezo pickup system (like most modern EUB's) which gives a very different tone than the pickup system of the original Baby Bass. So it may be a fine instrument, but I'm thinking it would need a lot of EQ'ing and careful string choice to get the Baby Bass sound.

A couple of years ago, I compared my BugBass to a Club Bass and thought that the Bug was much better in terms of both design and build. The Club had a problem where the action couldn't be set low enough without actually trimming the bridge and the sound wasn't as nice as the Bug, either.

Just what I thought. If I want a baby bass, make sure it's a standard baby bass or a baby bass copy. No other EUB. That seems to be a good rule. One of these days, I'll have one, pretend I'm Puerto Rican, and gig in salsa. Since salsa was my first serious endeavor on bass, they won't know any better. :hiding:
