Vote! Highway One Jazz vs. Schecter 004 vs. Geddy Lee Jazz

What's a better deal for Jazz and Rock playing?

The coming year is new bass time. After looking around alot and choosing the possible basses in my price range, I'm mainly considering 3 basses:

Schecter 004 ($600)
Fender Highway One Jazz ($800)
Fender Geddy Lee Jazz ($800)

Since I've already gotten feedback on the Geddy and have tried it out, I'm interested to hear how people compare the Highway One with the Schecter 004.
Please vote on which you think is a better deal for the money. Both have been called bright, versatile and sexy. I'm hoping to try both out sometime, but for now I'm asking the experts. :D

For those who have/ have tried a 004- how does the neck compare with the average jazz neck (and the geddy's neck) as I've heard it's quite thin.

Don't own either one, but A/B'd both about two weeks ago at the local store. Even though they are at similar price points, they are two different basses. The Schecter sounded a bit harsh compared to the Hwy One. Both felt good, the pots on the Schecter were a bit smoother and had more range than the Hwy One. The Jazz neck was more comfortable to me.

I would take either one if given to me, but my preference is the Hwy One.

YMMV and all that stuff.

The Fender Geddy Lee or The HWY-1 is a better bet IMHO.

The Fender will give more opportunities to change things like pick up, bridges, tuners, etc, if yu need to. You can even buy drop in preamps if you want to.

The Fender is much better supported by the after market. It is also worth more used. There is a bigger market for a used Fender than a Schecter. It may not command significantly more money but there will be more demand for it.

The thing is I'm not a big fan of the gloss neck and lack of color variations with the Geddy. It plays great, but I'm going to have to try what I think might be it's equal (sunburst HW1) to be able to decide.

I would order the HW1 from the store because I know I can try it out to decide between that and the Geddy, but I just don't want to pay 25% of either of them which is about what I have in the store account and have it sitting in storage of 6 months until I can get it paid off.

I spent, (wasted), the day yesterday playing alot of different basses in several GC's. Among them, were what you've listed. The Geddy would get my vote, cause I've got one and love it, then the Hwy 1's, which you should try first, some felt better than others. Didn't care much for any of the Schectors I tried. They sound fine, it's just the feel I didn't like, hard to explain. That said, there are other basses in that price range, if you don't mind more confusion. Good luck, hope you get something you really like.

then I guess you dont really want a Geddy ;)

and why not go the used route? you might get an American Jazz for a little less than the $800 or an American deluxe for a bit more..

The schecter does have a fast thin neck. from the 30-35 I have played and 2 I have owned compared to the 2 fenders I have owned the schecters cost less and sound/play better. But since schecter does not say Fender it will never get the same recognition.

Go play them both if you can.

I would go used but I've got almost $400 of store credit in my local store from intern-type work this past summer and the used section is usually a ghost town.
Being a teen with difficult courses at school I don't have time to get a part time job during the school year. If I can convince the store to let me withdraw the money from them I'd go used in a heartbeat. That's why I'm looking at these 3 basses, they're the best options based on what they're dealers of.

I suppose I could always do as Geddy has done and sand the neck down if I decide on it.

thats a whole different story...

still, I'd get the Geddy. I also dont like glossy necks (does anyone?:confused:), but you can do wonders with a scotch brite pad and 5 minutes of your time :D

and about finding it bland...you can always change the pickguard (for a tortoise...that would look great!)
